The 40 minute nap

My DS is 5months old.
He cannot seem to nap longer than 35-45 minutes at a time. I have tried playing around with feeding times and wake windows but nothing works.

When he wakes I have tried settling him back to sleep no luck. The only way I can extend a nap is to cuddle him on the sofa. I more than happy to do this but I'm hoping as he gets older he might nap longer....just wondering if anyone else has found this.
He also wakes in the car as soon as I'm home and also wakes in the pram as soon as I'm home, making my life slightly tricky to plan outings around nap and feedings!

Thanks

Average age for babies to link sleep cycles without assistance is 9 months (except for babies under 4 month sleep regression) What you describe is totally typical for a 5 month old.

It's a bugger but it doesn't last forever. My eldest couldn't be resettled. My boys could by 5.5 months (so keep walk in pram ir feed back to sleep on bed), and then started not to need r esettling by 8 months. My youngest is xoming up for 7 months and is hit and miss.

Reliable nap times will come, but you have to be a bit patient.

I had this child. He started taking longer naps at 9 months, when he started crawling and tiring himself out

I have the opposite problem, mine loves her sleep and get grouchy after 2 hours then I try to wake her up. I think it's luck of the draw. Mine takes the longest naps on me when I walk her in the carrier (as opposed to the pram). She would only last 10 minutes if the nap was no contact. Sometimes at the end of a sleep cycle she'll wake up look around and then nod off again if she's comfy.

I know this will be of no help whatsoever, so apologies, but when he hits 53 he will be able to nap for England. Even standing up.

Don't ask me how I know, I just know. 🤦‍♂️

This is very normal, but it's very annoying! It'll settle into longer stretches naturally at some point, try not to worry over it.
