Has anyone else noticed most baby weaning stuff is made of silicone and once you put it in the dishwasher it forever tastes of soap/dishwasher?

My poor baby hasn't made a fuss but when I've picked at his food or tried his straw to see if it was working I noticed it and it's horrible.

So I'm wondering if anyone else has found alternatives?

My baby is 13 months and does well with a straw or a sippy cup but he's very messy so I can't use an open cup.

We just use Tommee Tippee sippy cups (the cheapest type) and straw cups (from Munchkin or Tumtum tots).

We never had any issue with plastic cups - Tommee Tippee or a doidy cup (open cup). I know you said he can't use an open cup, but certainly he should be able to with help. For going out, the plastic cups with the lid. Or get a stainless steel bottle, like from One Green Bottle company. We have one that has a silicon straw (I don't notice it tastes funny at all) but I'm sure they have others.

Doing an extra rinse to get off any residue or a soak in milton's may help if it's actually just bacteria causing the weird taste.

Yes sorry I should have been more specific - I give him an open cup to practice in the bath or with small amounts at meals.

The main thing in after is a cup I can leave for him to sip water whenever he chooses or to take out and about.

Thanks for your advice

Great, thanks. You haven't noticed a soapy or dishwasher aftertaste that you can't get rid of?

I haven’t noticed any aftertaste or smelt anything funny and all have been through the dishwasher multiple times. I only put water in the ones that have bits that are hard to clean like most of the straw cups and use the Tommee Tippee ones for milk.

We still use sippy cups at age 2. My DD is capable of using an open cup but usually treats it as water play and tips the water all over her plate or the table.

We use liewood silicone. Ds is now 4 years and he’s had the same couple since weaning at 6 months. No aftertaste, no discolour. We use the Liewood silicone straws for adults also and they have no aftertaste form dishwasher
