Age to start pubity in girls?

My DD is age 7, in year 2. She has BO (body odour) even after not doing much sweaty exercise. She is tall for her age (140cm, almost the tallest in the year). Wears age 9-10 clothes. She's average build.

Does anyone have any advice on if it's normal for a child of her age to have BO? And is there something I should do about it, such as see a GP? I'm wondering what age her periods are re likely to start. I was just age 12 and started at the end of year 7, but I'm pretty sure I don't remember any signs of pubity before this.

My DS is older than her but still no signs of pubity at all, which is why I'm wondering if she is very young to start this. And also what to expect!

This can happen yes. Not necessarily an indicator of periods starting early. Lots of girls get the signs of puberty in a different order.
Make sure she’s using deodorant and washing every day (preferably in the morning)

yep - most girls start between 8-13, so it's not very early at 7 - and presumably she's going to be 8 soon-ish? (I'm assuming it wasn't her 7th birthday recently) - and she's so tall, she's the size of an "average" 8-9 year old, so it seems about right?

Must seem so early for you and baby girl though!!

The link suggests maybe taking her to the GP if you wanted. I would guess it depends how close to 8 she is?

I would say, yes, it's on the earlier side. I don't necessarily think you need to see a GP about it though. Assuming she is otherwise well, then it's simply a matter of making sure she washes daily (with soap!) and wears deodorant. If there were other signs of precocious puberty, then yes, I'd see a GP, but otherwise it's not really a 'problem' and the GP would just tell you to keep up on hygiene and use deodorant.

My daughter started needing to wear deodorant at 8. 15 months on and she has no other signs of puberty starting.

I have two cousins (they are sisters) who both got their period at age 9.

I myself was 13 years old and I believe my sister was 11. So age range certainly can vary. I'd be starting some gentle chats and maybe looking for an age appropriate guide book for her.

I remember my mum making sure we kept a sanitary towel with us at all times in case we suddenly got our first period. My sister was on an away trip with her class when it happened to her so i feel its good to prep them when time is right. Funnily I don't remember what happened to me LOL.

Best of luck. You sound like a great mum 😊

Hi does she have any other signs of puberty? Age 7 is quite early to start puberty but not uncommon in girls.

My 5 year old is currently going through tests at the children's hospital for precocious puberty due to her getting breast development at age 4.

Wish44 · 08/06/2024 07:09

My dd has the occasional whiff of BO from
about 9 and I was concerned it was puberty. But nothing else happened.

breast buds just visible now at 11.5.

ichundich · 08/06/2024 07:14

Mine had BO at age 6 or 7 but didn't start periods until 13.5. BO seems more common in girls at that age.

Thingsthatgo · 08/06/2024 07:19

Have a look into adrenaline puberty. My DD had BO young and I took her to the GP. They did some tests including bone age X-ray and some blood tests.
They were not worried in the end, and said that she isn't going through early puberty, but adrenarche.

The paediatric gyno I ended up taking my daughter said anything before 10 is worth checking as early puberty before 10 can be caused by pituitary tumours and can also stop them growing to proper height etc.My daughter showed signs at 8 and started periods at 9 they found a pituitary tumour and she now has treatment did that, we were lucky to get help before bones fused too.

Lila878 · 08/06/2024 07:25

My neice had BO from around 7/8 then buds at 10 and period at 12. so it can still take a while before the rest.

Hi my daughter is booked in for an mri scan to check for tumours. Could you please tell me what other symptoms your daughter had

Turbulent1 · 08/06/2024 08:26

Hi, my daughter had early puberty signs and her periods were non stop. She had no other signs of a pituitary tumour. Hers is 8mm. She may still need surgery if the medication does not shrink it. She is now on progesterone, a puberty blocker and medication to shrink the lump. We are hoping the puberty blocker will allow her to continue to grow as she should.

LivelyTraybake · 08/06/2024 08:35

My daughter had breast buds and pubic hair at 9 then started periods at 10 and 9 months.
We were told within the range of normal, I was worried about her height as she was only 4’10” when her periods started. However, she is nearly 15 now and has regular periods and is 5’4” which I think is probably her adult height I am 5’5 but DM is 5’1” and MIL is 4’11” so she was never going to be a massively tall woman.
