hello, id say same as before, i bought a cheap suit for interviews but dress varied from jeans to suits so anything in the middle will be fine im sure! classic questions were why do you want to be a nurse? what qualities can you give? team work is important but remember that nurses are becoming far more autonomous. knowledge of new nurse roles, nurse practitioners, prescribers etc,...disscussions wont be too heavy but speak at every chance! dont be a wall flower because nursing courses involve alot of discussion work. above all try and enjoy it! make an effort to speak to any and everyone. dont sit alone at coffee assume they will watch you at all time! good luck!

The thing that I think got me accepted is to be very focused on the main part of your job, patient care and being the patient's advocate. If you say (and feel) that way you are halfway there. Most questions they ask you can usually be brought back to that. Really try not to get too nervous, I was so nervous for my first interview and it didn't help at all.

Current issues, think MRSA, anything you know about that I expect may well come up. PALS, the relatively new patient complaints/comments/advocacy service (PALS stands for patient advisory liasion service) and again can be related back to patient care. Social issues, like someone else said, are important. I don't think it has happened yet this year, but frequently the flu and pneumonia cause hospitals to be overcowded, usually elderly patients and can cause great pressure on the hospital. This can be related back to social stuff, iepatients living in poverty, not able to afford heating, sufficient diet etc.

Teamwork, how you enjoy it, why you think you will work well in a team (highly likely to be a question), and yet as Chloe said, how you are able to work alone. You could also relate that to being a safe practitioner, that you are able to recognise your weaknesses/extent of knowledge and will not act outside of that but seek guidance. That is another statement that I feel has held me in good stead for interviews.

And, the worst of the worst, but best to be prepared for in an interview for the what are you strengths and weaknesses. It is a horrible question but so much better if you know what to say! Awful if you sit there and don't know.

Have you looked in any charity shops for a suit? Because I think it might be worth it. I wore a suit for my some of my interviews for my training, I was offered the ones I wore a suit for. I wore a suit to my last interview, and a year later the sister interviewing me commented on how smart I looked and that that was the only reason they gave me the job!! I don't know really if she was joking or not! But it obviously made an impresion. Also if you know you look good and are dressed appropriately then it will help your confidence. And if you are the only one in a suit, well then you will stand out as having cared about your appearance, suggesting the career is important to you, and will look smart! I really hope this helps and that your interview goes well. Where is it you are applying to? Hugs!

Nickola, if you are applying to do adult nursing, by all means look at stuff with depression and self harm, but remember that will mainly come under mental health nursing. Sorry JudgeFlounce, but I don't want her to get bogged down with TMI IYSWIM!

Oh NIK !!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is fabulous news Congrats on getting the interview. I can't give much advice as to what to say etc, but I agree with 'be youself', I'm sure they'll see your passion for nursing and believe me that counts for one HECK of a lot. I'm so pleased for you

Moomina · 03/01/2005 20:13

Do you know, threads like this are why I love MN. So much good advice and given so freely. Loads of luck, Nikcola. You really deserve it.

I can only echo what others have said. I have a midwifery interview on Weds that involves essay, group discussion, talk with a pregnant woman (tutor with a pillow up her jumper, perhaps?!) and individual interview. All I can say is, keep smiling, ask plenty of questions but don't try to dominate and don't worry! they expect nerves - in fact over-confidence is not a good sign as far as most interviewers are concerned. You'll knock 'em dead.

oatcake · 04/01/2005 22:25

suit definitely not necessary, but obviously not grunge.

From what you've said, you'll be undertaking problem based learning rather than traditional lectures. In which case...

group discussion, is just that. in my case, a group of 10 of us were shown a photo and asked to discuss what we saw and any possible implications of what was going on. They just want to see how you interact with your potential colleagues.

You won't be expected to know indepth current health issues (that's what you want to get on the course to learn!) - just use your common sense and perhaps get tomorrow's guardian which as I remember is social issues day???

all the best.

well done! he bursary for the diploma is a real help and you can top up to a degree at your future employers expense in only a year! A word from the wise.... if you currently claim working tax credit for childcare and will not be eligabe when you start uni then dont decalsre it on your bursary application form! I did and was told that i shouldnt have done as i wont get it when i start... because i did declare it i am still fighting for the childcare allowance....
