Are their job agencies or similar organizations that you can pay to help with your CV and job applications? I feel there are but no idea where to begin finding one ( except here). I want to help my unemployed graduate son who lives in Glasgow . Would appreciate any help or suggestions thank you .

In case it’s not clear, as well as help with his cv and covering letter etc, it’d be great if they helped him actually look for an appropriate job too. I’m out the country with a work posting and this can’t really wait until I’m back as he’s shrinking as a person with each knock back.

His university careers service will be delighted to help but he will need to contact them.

Thanks but they haven’t seemed to have help him so far - handouts and leaflets - which is why I was wondering if I could pay an agency to be more ‘hands on’. I was hoping someone on Mumsnet could recommend one.

Is he on benefits OP? If he is the job centre should be able to refer him to someone who can help. There's also National Careers Service but I'm unsure if you can self refer to them.

He’s not yet but we are encouraging him to sign on from over here. I didn’t know they did that. Thanks 👍

Has he actually made an appt with one of their careers advisors though? Lots of students/grads think wandering into the careers service and picking up leaflets is all there it. It isn't - they actually need to make an appt with someone who can spend half an hour going through their CV and giving them contacts or details of companies they've worked with and that recent grads get employed by and specific grad schemes.

Other than that, yes the job centre will definitely help, though he'll only get two months to focus on jobs he wants. After that he'll be expected to apply for anything.

Can he get any old job for now - there must be tourist places that want summer staff, retail and hospitality are always looking this time of year. It will be easier to apply for grad schemes having had a job, however menial, and most grads will end up applying to tens of schemes - even hundreds. Ds applied for about 50 over two years if it helps (got further through each the process each time as he got more practised) - and that's not unusual. And now has a very sought after job starting this Autumn.
