What time does your 3 year old go to bed?

Our 3.5 year old hasn’t napped through the day since she was 20 months old and for a long time, we’ve had a reasonably solid 7.15 bedtime with her asleep between 7.30 and 7.45. She wakes up at 6.20am on the dot! Its always worked pretty well (with a random early wake or tiny lie in dotted around)
However, she’s moved to the pre-school room in her nursery recently and got a new keyworker (she had her previous one from being 9 months old!). She’s settled well into the room and loves her new keyworker but, wow, she is exhausted and, particularly on nursery days, she’s just a mess in the evenings (she’s there 9am-4.30pm, 3 days per week)I think it’s a lot of the ‘after school restraint collapse’.
We've pulled her bedtime forward to 6.30 to be asleep by 7 but she’s still a
wreck to be honest. Would it be mean to take her up at 6pm to aim to be asleep by 6.30? She’s not as bad on non nursery days and far more emotionally regulated but she’s still just beyond herself from 5.30 onwards. If someone told me they put their kid to bed at 6pm, I’d think they were mean 🤣 we do the standard teeth, stories, cuddle routine

Ours has never napped since they were around 1yr. We do bed routine at 1900, usually tucked up at 1930 and asleep by 2000. They go to nursery 0800-1800 so are pretty active during the day. They wake up at 0700, often earlier, rarely later.

7pm-6am if we’re lucky. 830pm-4am if we’re not. Usually 730pm-530am. In the process of dropping his nap but really fight bedtime atm. Full time nursery. 730an-5pm

8pm - 8am no naps during the day.

Is also at private nursery 09.00-16.30 Mon-Fri.

It's not 'mean' to put a tired child to bed.

It's mean to keep them up unnecessarily.

UnravellingTheWorld · 01/06/2024 20:50

Mine is 2 months off 3, and if he hasn't napped he goes to bed at 6:30 to be IN bed (theoretically asleep) by 7.

Sevenisfineforus · 01/06/2024 20:50

Usually 10-11pm as has a 1-2 hour nap after lunch

MissLC · 01/06/2024 20:56

My 3 yo still naps most days and sleeps 8pm to 6am, with a 30 minute nap.
The days that she doesn't nap she is exhausted and asleep by 6.30 or 7pm but she is on the edge from 4pm ish. On Wednesday she hadn't had a nap and fell asleep while we were still getting her ready for bed at 6.30, there was no rousing her and she then slept until 6am.

mondaytosunday · 01/06/2024 20:59

7.30ish.

Ours hasn't napped since he was just over 18months. He's in bed by 6pm, always asleep by 6.30pm and nearly always awake at 6am.

But we're lucky with him, Mr 6 Year Old Brother is usually still messing around at 9.30pm no matter how tired he is.

DD1 is 3 and goes to nursery 9am-4.30pm, 3 days a week. She naps for 90min-2 hours daily and sleeps 9pm-7am. She isn't tired after nursery, we often stop at a park afterwards and spend time in the garden after dinner.

DS is 3 months off being three. Naps at nursery for around 1.5 hours. Usually sleeps 8-8.30-7pm. He can bust through without a nap but is miserable from 4pm onwards. He’s at nursery full time from 8-5 so we value our evenings together as happy family and don’t need the kids to be in bed super early or on their knees with tiredness!!

Bibbitybobbity70 · 01/06/2024 21:16

Honestly if she needs an earlier bedtime for a couple of weeks just do that. They're all different & every family is different.
I have some 3/4 Yr old who's parents happily let them sleep 2-3hrs every day so they can stay up later & have family time every day, others by 2yrs don't nap & go to bed very early. No family/child's needs are the same, do whatever works for you all.

Thanks guys, I guess it is quite early but hopefully just a phase while she adjusts to the new room. I just hate the thought of her getting in from nursery at 4.45 and going to bed at 6!

My four year old old daughter (July birthday) started school in the September following, fell asleep in the car on the way home from school (this was at about 4.30/4.45pm. I popped her into bed when we got home and she slept until about 5.30/5.45 next morning when she would have a bath, a big breakfast and start all over again. This continued for a few weeks, it wasn't ideal that she missed supper but it was the best way to ensure she had a good sleep.
