I’m sure something is wrong with my baby

I have a 6 week old who I’m concerned about. He’s been constipated recently and everytime he has done a poo it’s like carrot purée - bright orange and no texture. He did 2 days no poo, then another 2 days, now he’s on 4 days of no poo. He’s also being sick after nearly every feed - he’s breastfed, vomit is like curdled milk. His weight gain hasn’t been ideal, he’s on the 0.4th centile but he breastfeeds well and when I pump / top him up he will drink it.

for context he was born via csection at 37w because I had GD, he was in special care for 2 days on cpap, and he was returned to special care at day 10 for prolonged jaundice (no treatment needed), high co2 in blood (came up with heat mat), and lost 11.7% body weight (eventually came up on week 3)

Also have taken him to a&e for this and asked hv but seem to think nothing of it. He’s my third baby and I’ve never experienced anything like this

Sounds like allergy - cut out milk/ egg/ soya and see if he improves after 2 weeks

I asked this at a/e and they said he would present with an eczema like rash if so and told me allergies were over diagnosed in babies. I have a load of food allergies though which require an epipen so I feel like it’s definitely a possibility but they seemed to think I was worrying for no reason

As he’s so small I wouldn’t change anything until you’ve seen your GP - can you ask for a referral to the hospital paediatrician/ dietitian service?

Oh also spoke to GP who aren’t worried. So a&e, GP and hv all think it’s normal but I just feel like somethings off. I met a baby today who was a week old and is bigger and more alert than him :/ he pretty much sleeps all day/night still I just don’t think this all seems right regardless of what doctors have said

every baby is different. Mine is 9 weeks and I EBF too. At 6 weeks he was being sick after every meal that sometimes looked like curdled milk. It has settled down down and is rarely sick now.

I would say his poo is more browny orange but it is only liquid. He also goes a couple of days without a poo. I read EBF babies can go 7 days without a poo.

Sounds like your baby is just doing things that are common with BF babies.

But get a second opinion if you're really nervous. Better to be safe than sorry

Breastfed baby and experienced similar things at up to 6 or 7 weeks. Very sicky (like curdled milk) but gaining weight so no doctors were concerned. Poop was yellow, kind of runny and no texture. 2 days no poo was the longest (4 days is an awful long time). I cut out dairy and she seemed more settled, but can't say if that was the reason why. 3 months now, and poos at regular times but still yellow and runny (lots of nappy explosions). She is doing well and I'm not worried at all. Think it's quite normal for breastfed babies. But of course, trust your instincts and don't be afraid to seek a second opinion or book another appointment

Potatomashed · 01/06/2024 18:54

Trust your instincts Mama! Are you able to seek advice from your local infant feeding team or even better, a private lactation consultant?

WonderingWanda · 01/06/2024 18:59

Bf babies poo can he all sorts of varieties of colour. The one to worry about is green and frothy. What you describe sounds normal. I had a sicky bf baby, he used to swallow a lot of air due to a rapid letdown...so ge was guzzling but it was hard to get the wind up afterwards. I think he also got a lot of reflux so we used infacol.

I agree with pp, go with your gut you know your baby best and don’t let them fob you off

not a similar experience but I knew that something wasn’t right feeding wise with my 2nd and was fobbed off for months, I was right he had a genetic condition and I knew deep down all along, professionals just thought they knew best when they didn’t. He’s fine now it is managed and supported Good luck x x x

orangepoopscoop · 02/06/2024 21:55

Thank you everyone. He’s finally pooped today atleast but still being sick after every feed. I’m going to see if I can get in touch with the breastfeeding specialists tomorrow and see if they think it’s out of the ordinary etc x
