8.5 month old not crawling/rolling

Hi,

just looking for some advice my DS is 8.5 months old and I have a few little niggles about his progress.

He can sit up unaided and the past week has been pushing himself into the sitting position from his tummy (when he’s on tummy time), before this he was lifting himself and sliding backwards for weeks, which has stopped now that he has learnt to get into the sitting position so worried he won’t be able to crawl now as he’s just getting into sitting position.

eye contact is okay will look at you but not great.

can reach out arms when I go to pick him
up, will put out his hands to pull onto my hands so he can stand.

Sleeps relatively well always, but cannot roll over only has a handful of times from belly to back, never back to belly.

Can track objects and follows people if they leave or come into the room.

Will smile at us and occasionally laugh but not a great deal. Enjoys peekaboo.

lifts feet to play with them

babbling/screeching but no actual mama/dada etc, sometimes grunting more and tensing his whole body when laying down on back which is worrying.

he hasn’t rolled back to belly and won’t even attempt it.

constantly wants to put everything into mouth/licking and sucking on everything.

doesnt really look when we call him think he turns more to the sound not his name.

scratches surfaces not constantly but does.

when sitting on sofa or floor constantly kicking his legs like rubbing his feet together.

arms and legs always moving

wont imitate or copy sounds or if we sing to him he won’t babble along.

not clapping/pointing or handing me toys

won’t really cry if he’s hungry

constantly looking up at lights or ceiling…always looking at door knobs and plug switches (silver)

when outside looks up at trees.

has no separation anxiety.

doesn’t cry when he wakes up.

no babbling mama or dada

will look everywhere and not acknowledge anything or anyone when he’s outside in his pram

wont attempt to hold his own bottle.

looking for any help and advice please?

As I read your list I think each thing could absolutely be normal, or could maybe point to a problem.
I think the fact you have posted here means you are worried. it would be very reasonable to take this list to your gp yo discuss it. He might benefit from a physio assessment etc.

thank you for replying, he’s had a physio appt for the fact he hasn’t rolled back to belly, and she said she had zero concerns, it was the next day he started pushing to sit and not sliding back anymore, he was sliding back and pushing up infront of the physio.

My almost 9m old does all of these things - sounds very normal to me! He can roll but it sounds like your physio wasn’t worried? You should have a 9-12m developmental review with HV team soon so can take your concerns there but honestly everything you mentioned sounds like a curious, developmentally normal baby to me

It's hard to tell from your description. There are some developmental amber flags there but he's still so young you'll need to just ride it out. What would help you at this point? Could you pay for a private paeds appt for a review to reassure you? Would talking to a therapist for a space for your worries help?

Hi, thank you for replying! The physio wasn’t worried at all just said to keep practicing the rolling with him.

Hi what would you say are the amber flags?? I’ve spoken to HV and GP they seem to think it’s just my own anxiety.

Sounds a lot like my DD at 8 months old. Except she would roll back to front, because that’s how she liked to sleep, and never front to back. Some of the things you mention are just normal baby stuff, like shoving everything in the mouth. Clapping, waving and pointing are 12 month milestones. Altogether it might be something, or maybe it’s nothing. My DD walked at 9.5 months and is now a very agreeable 7 year old who has always settled well at nursery, school, holiday clubs etc. In your case I’d say probably keep an eye on it and see what the health visitor or GP think based on the 1 year milestone checklist.
