Our baby has been furniture cruising and walking holding our hands for months but she will not walk independently, as soon as we let go she'll go down on her knees, any advice? Making life difficult as she cries wanting to hold our hands to move about

My dd didn't walk till she was 18 months old. She shuffled on her bum and was very fast. My dd was lazy 🤣Do you have a push along walker or a toy buggy? That might help encourage her to do it herself if she can pull herself up to stand.

Honestly there's nothing you can do but wait. It took mine about 10 months to pluck up the courage to let go of the furniture or our hands and nothing we did made the slightest bit of difference. They have to want to do it.

Pr1mr0se · 26/05/2024 12:10

Don't stress about it. She's learning to walk and needs the confidence that you're there to keep her steady. Once she's sure she can do it on her own, she will.

You can always try positioning furniture so she can walk about rooms at home with easy access to somewhere to hold onto which isn't you.

She's not ready to walk. She'll walk when she's ready.

Notallscumbags · 26/05/2024 13:12

Leave her be. She'll do it in her own time.

BuffaloCauliflower · 26/05/2024 13:12

She’s still figuring it out. 15 months is still well within the realm of ‘normal’. She’ll walk when she’s ready

lifeisafunnyoldgame · 26/05/2024 13:15

Another one at 18 months. Her dad and I married, chose the date when she would be around 18 months in the hope she would be flower girl. Married on the Sat, would not walk. Checked into a lodge on the Monday, sat her down as we unloaded the car. She stood up and walked the length of the room.

They walk when they are ready to, don’t worry.

Mrsjayy · 26/05/2024 13:15

Mine were 16/17 months tbh I just let them cruise and crawl you need to stop hand holding them all the time let her whinge .

MissPeaches · 26/05/2024 13:16

My son was the same. The doctor told us they don’t even worry until 18 months and that was right. At 17.5 months my son finally took his first steps. Ten years later he’s a talented athlete and I can’t get him to sit down!

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 26/05/2024 13:18

I know a child who didn’t walk until he was nearly 2 and now has no issues with mobility at 6/7. I don’t think 15 months is that unusual. She’ll do it when she’s ready.

MrMotivatorsLeotard · 26/05/2024 13:19

Your fifteen month old can’t yet walk, not “won’t walk”. She will get there in time. Life is difficult with toddlers, but even when they walk you still have to hold their hands for a long time! They’re unsteady on their feet for quite a while, you have to be patient.

Mushroo · 26/05/2024 13:23

I’ve seen online they might do it if you put ball pit balls in their hands.

Gives the illusion of holding on to something. Worth a try but otherwise just a waiting game!

WeightoftheWorld · 26/05/2024 13:24

That's normal, loads of 15 month olds aren't walking independently. She will get there in her own time, you can't really do anything about it.

My DC1 was walking independently at 16 months. DC2 not until 21 months but DC2 does have some minor additional physical needs it transpired.

Mrsdht · 26/05/2024 13:34

My friends daughter used one leg to bum shuffle till she was 2. She was so quick! She's now 16 and a dancer. I know it can cause worry but im sure Your dd will walk when she's ready

Shergill15 · 26/05/2024 13:59

Anywhere up to 18 months is well within the realms of normal IIRC. DD was about 16 months before she took her first independent steps, had been cruising along the furniture a while before that. She's now 9 and is never still! So please don't worry yet, she'll do it in her own time x

CountingCrones · 26/05/2024 14:01

Perfectly normal, don't worry about it. She'll walk independently when she's ready.

maw1681 · 26/05/2024 14:08

Just keep doing what you're doing and don't stress about it. She's obviously capable of she's cruising around the furniture, just needs a bit longer to take independent steps. HV won't be concerned until at least 18 months.
Make the most of it tbh!

BurbageBrook · 26/05/2024 15:04

Don't push her to walk before she's ready, chill out. It's normal. It's not a competition or a race!

Superscientist · 26/05/2024 15:57

My daughter was 9 months when she started cruising furniture but flat out refused to walk. One Sunday when she was 15 months we were sat with 4 grown ups in a square and she did 2 steps between us which was her first independent steps. The next day she ran and has never stopped

She has followed this trend with everything she has learnt. She rolled twice at 18 weeks and then didn't roll again for 6 weeks then she rolled continuously! She definitely won't do something until she absolutely knows for sure she can do it!

Same with my eldest, he was super fast on his knees, it was more like a sideways crawl.

WorstBJever · 26/05/2024 16:06

My eldest didn't walk until 17 months, he's now 9. He has always been very cautious, it's like he missed the whole tottering around stage. He went straight from crawling to fully walking very confidently in a couple of days. Don't fret and don't rush, this won't be important in a few years. (I mean that kindly, I know it's hard not to worry about hitting milestones)

hiredandsqueak · 26/05/2024 18:42

Dsis little girl walked at 9 months and my dd at 18 months. Within a fortnight of starting walking dd could do everything my neice could. Dsis and I agreed I had it much easier with a late walker than she had. She will walk when she is ready enjoy these last few weeks where she is more easily contained would be my advice.

She is totally fine, I think she started walking independently not long after I posted that, she just needed a bit of reassurance I think but she's running about now no problem!
