Baby's pupils are different sizes

Hello, just wondered if anyone has had any experience with this? She is 8 months old, I have always found myself fixated on her eyes but couldn't work out why. As she's got bigger I've noticed that her left pupil is intermittently larger than the left and noticbly so. Both react to light etc. Took her to the GP today who said he couldn't see any difference after examination, I showed him some photos of her eyes and he did a red light reflex test and then referred her straight away to the eye hospital. Any advice would be appreciated. TIA

Hi OP

No advice other than, please try not to worry and wait to see what the specialists say.

I took the liberty to have a quick Google and the top article was
and I quote - but do not Google yourself as you can come up with anything

From Google and link below - I DID not click on link but got the headlines bit

Babies born with different sized pupils may not have any underlying disorder. If other family members also have similar pupils, then the pupil size difference could be genetic and is nothing to worry about. Also, for unknown reasons, pupils may temporarily differ in size

Anisocoria: MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia

Anisocoria is unequal pupil size. The pupil is the black part in the center of the eye. It gets larger in dim light and smaller in bright light.

Thank you for replying and for the link, I have been googling since which of course is the worst thing to do! I'm hoping it is simply this and nothing more sinister.

Yes - my now 29 year old has both different sized pupils and eyes. We were referred to eye clinic and she had follow ups until she was about 5. It's less noticeable as she grew (and got hair). No issues with her eyesight and her vision is perfect. She's just lopsided.

It's not that unusual but of course see your GP again if you are worried.

Edited

The GP has already referred her to the eye hospital. Not sure there's much else they can do. No need to harass them.

OP, a lot of people think David Bowie had different coloured eyes but he actually had anisocoria, or different sized pupils. A lot of the time it can be harmless. Hope you don't need to wait too long for your hospital appointment

BlowDryRat · 24/05/2024 15:57

I have a wonky pupil in my left eye. My eyesight is fine but it understandably worried my parents when they noticed it on baby me. The hospital ran various checks to confirm nothing sinister.

Seriestwo · 24/05/2024 15:59

Same, mine’s now 22 and I was sure she was a gonner. She doesn’t even wear specs.

worrying, but try not to drive yourself mad while you wait to me seen (I did)

BrownSauceOnBeans · 24/05/2024 16:13

Yeah mine has it and my husband. Anascoria I think it’s called.
We also got referred to the hospital when she was six months old as the doctor was very alarmed but the consultant took one look at her dad‘s eyes one look at her eyes and went. ‘Yeah she just gets it off him’ and that was that.
she is 15 now.

I have different sized pupils, it has never caused any problems. Late 30s now and have perfect vision for now!! Best wishes OP xx

fridascruffs · 24/05/2024 20:09

My son had it, like you I noticed when he was very young (months old). It was intermittent, more noticeable in low light when the pupils are bigger. GP referred to a specialist who checked this and that and said it was fine. DS is 20 now, he's fine.

OP and others contributing here - Thank you for putting the OP's mind at rest

Yes, it can be very worrying and looking up Google is not good but we are all guilty of that

I posted the first bit of the Google search and it was indicating good news and you guys have confirmed that but still a good idea to go for the appt for concrete reassurances

Enjoy your weekend OP and others here

Laura Collett (Olympic Medalist in eventing) lost the sight in 1 eye in an accident, came back to win at Paris after losing the sight in that eye as an adult, so people do learn to compensate - and probably easier for babies as their brains are so adaptable!
