Tongue tie recovery experience?

Hi all,

I am wondering about peoples experience with their baby getting tongue tie snipped and how long it took to have an improvement in feeding?

My little girl is 6 weeks old next tuesday and got her tongue tie snipped 2 weeks ago-- this was due to feeding pain for me (although this was actually much improved in the days before the snip) and the also had lots of wind which I thought might be related. After the snip the feeding seemed the same/slightly improved, the ENT consultant that did it said there was no need to do any stretches/exercises, that feeding is enough.

Last week I had a follow up appointment with a lactation consultant who really disagreed with him and said we need to do stretching exercises by stretching the wound 6x daily-- she demonstrated and it seemed barbaric tbh. She even said "you can press too deeply on it, press as deep as you can"😔 my poor daughter was very distressed.

Since then I havent really been doing the exercises-- I do run my finger gently around the area up and down to try and prevent it healing together but not with the force or intensity demonstrated by the lactation consultant. I also spoke to the community nurse who disagreed with them and said it was cruel. However the last few days feeding seems to have disimproved/latch is pinchy and my nipples have that "lipstick" shape again... I am now worried that the tongue tie has reattached?

My daughter also doesnt seem to stick her tongue out, I am wondering if perhaps she doesnt know how to use it since the snip was done? We got no exercises to do. She is gaining weight and plenty of dirty/wet nappies but can be quite fussy and sometimes when I latch her on she cries/is fussy/pulls away from the breast. But that could also be part of the 6 week growth spurt....

I am not sure where to go from here. Feeding is uncomfortable but not to an extent that I will give up, however my daughter seems uncomfortable at the breast. Does it just take time or have I really messed up by not doing the stretches? Im very confused with all the different opinions and ENT was very definite that they weren't needed.

Apologies for the essay and grateful for any opinions!

Hi @Janeykat I missed this when you originally posted. Sorry to hear you were having trouble. How are you getting on now?

Hi @OMGsamesame thanks for your message! Nearly 2 months on and things are going well and still exclusively breastfeeding :) pain is totally gone, feeds are quicker and my daughter is starting to sleep in longer stretches. It turns out she has cows milk protein allergy so that may have been why she was so fussy, but I have cut all dairy and soy from my diet and she is much improved. Still some tricky patches but all in all its good and I am glad I persevered🙂

How was CMPA diagnosed?

@OMGsamesame it was diagnosed off symptoms (rash on face, diarrhea, general discomfort, eventually blood in nappies) and these generally improved when I quit dairy
