We were away all weekend with family and yesterday when we got home my niece has come down with a sickness bug. I have severe phobia of sick and petrified my daughter will get it. I’ve read bugs will show up after 24-48 hours

do you think we will miss it at all? Getting myself in such a state!!

OP posts:

No one here can say! But if you have a child they’re going to be sick at some point, worrying won’t help

Hey lovely, fellow emetephobe here, I’ve been told you only can catch bugs if you’ve been in contact with the vomit/diarrhoea e.g. through not hand washing etc or not cleaning up properly after someone has vomited so if the vomiting started once you were gone you’ll be absolutely fine xx

That's not true -- norovirus, for example, can be inhaled, or caught from touching a contaminated surface, and it can live outside the body for several days.

OP, I sympathise, but if not this time, there will absolutely be a time when your child will throw up, whether from a virus or too much chocolate, and you should work on dealing with your phobia ideally before that happens.

To be fare no one likes dealing with vomit it is gross . I once had to get out bath heavily pregnant as husband was working away to deal with it , that ruined the whole end of the day treat of bath . I ended the day with a face t-shirt mask
(long before face masks were common ).Just accept that it is gonna happen and make advance plans to cope .(probably if lucky nowadays from the net)

You might get away with it, you might not. Phobias are horrible and irrational but sadly, helping your children and being there for them when they ate unwell is a fundamental and unavoidable part of parenting.
I assume you are having therapy to cure your emetophobia.

She might and then again might not.

However you do need to get therapy to help you with this phobia and anxiety. It’s not fair on your Dd to live like this and it WILL rub off on her.

Your niece came down with a sickness bug after you'd been away, but once she was no longer with you?
That's fine, I don't think you're contagious before vomiting/symptoms start.

AegonT · 21/05/2024 15:20

Fellow emetaphobe here. If you were away at the weekend and niece didn't show symptoms till she was home at her house then you shouldn't have caught it from her. There is a chance she caught somewhere you also were on your trip but I wouldn't worry it's not hugely likely if she's the only case so far. Good hygeine works well for norovirus. We've never had more than one case from each bug in our house, helps to have more than one bathroom. Husband has dealt with it whenever he could and I find when it has happened and he isn't there you just deal with it, then wash your hands loads and it isn't as bad as the fear!

Very sensible advice

Your child is not going to sail through childhood without getting sick.

You need to seek help for your phobia or your anxiety will affect your child.

Please consider getting therapy.

Depends what bug it is, lots are contagious before the being sick starts.
