1 year old doesn't want her morning milk

My little girl is 13 months old and is on two bottles a day of cows milk. We offer her 8oz morning and night, she always finishes her night time bottle (dream feed at 10:30pm) but she's never interested in her morning bottle and will only drink approx 1oz before she pushes the bottle away.
We have tried giving it to her when she first wakes up (7am), just before her morning nap (9:30am), after her morning nap (10:30am) and she reacts the same way every time. On the odd occasion she will finish it all but not often.
I am not sure what else we can do apart from give the morning bottle up completely but I am worried she won't be getting enough calcium if we do that.
She loves her food, she has cheese nearly every day and drinks a lot of water.
Suggestions welcome!

If she's having dairy in other ways tbh I wouldn't force the milk on her. My son was 12 months on the dot and he just didn't want to drink milk. He ate dairy and had milk in his cereal etc was absolutely fine

sleekcat · 21/05/2024 10:10

She will be fine, it sounds as though she is getting plenty of calcium from other sources. My youngest wouldn't drink anything at all from a cup or bottle at that age, he would only breastfeed, which gradually filtered down to only before bed. The health visitor said not to worry as he would be getting enough fluids and nutrition from his meals.

You can probably drop the dream feed

Sound's like a dairy over load!

Looks like the child is getting enough calcium, so I personally wouldn't force the milk.

Fontainebleau007 · 21/05/2024 10:15

Agree with pp maybe drop the dream feed too

takealettermsjones · 21/05/2024 10:49

See it as a gift - she's weaning herself off the bottles!

lonerr · 21/05/2024 11:24

Thanks all.
I was wondering whether to drop the night time bottle but as it's the only bottle of milk I know she will finish I didn't think it would be the right thing to do. Maybe I will try dropping the night time bottle tonight and see what happens tomorrow.
If she doesn't drink her morning milk tomorrow after not giving her a bottle tonight, I assume I carry on with the night time bottle and just drop the morning one?

I would drop the dream feed entirely, she will adjust and longer term it will cause problems with night wettings, and potty training.
Does she have milk before bed? I would move to little and often. If she has an ounce or two after a meal and maybe 4 oz after a nap she will be fine. The main thing is hydration.

For context my DD completely refused a bottle from 8 months old. It wasn't possible to continue to BF.

We added milk to her yoghurts, she ate tons of cheese [still does at 13], and did all sorts for about 12 months. Milk based puddings, cheesy pasta, home made ice lollies during hot weather.

At about 2.5 she did a complete turnaround. It was a boiling hot summer and a cold cup of milk was suddenly the food of the gods. So I really would try not to stress though I remember I was extraordinarily stressed by it all. It didn't help with going back to work. The GP or health visitor won't be at all if you ask.

Thanks for your advice. She doesn't have any milk before bed, just her dream feed at 10:30pm. She drinks plenty of water throughout the day so I don't think we have any issues with hydration!
I will try and give her a few ounces here and there through the day then and see how we get on with that, tbh I would love to drop the 10:30pm feed so I can go to bed a bit earlier!!!

She doesn’t need either of them.

shardlakem · 21/05/2024 20:13

Mine just had one bottle before bed at 12 months, as others have said it sounds like she will get plenty of calcium etc in her food :) I would also suggest dropping the dream feed and trying it earlier as it should help you all have a more restful night! Mine took a little while to get used to not having milk over night and woke for water for a few weeks but now doesn't seem to want anything at night time.

Fleur240 · 21/05/2024 20:22

NHS website states ‘Try to give your child at least 350ml (12oz) of milk a day, or 2 servings of foods made from milk, such as cheese, yoghurt or fromage frais. Full-fat cheese, yoghurt and fromage frais are recommended up to the age of 2’

Revelatio · 21/05/2024 20:27

Definitely drop the night feed! Why would you do that to yourself unless they’re awake and crying! Admittedly we were fortunate and didn’t have to feed in the night past 12w, but at 12m that would have killed me!! I don’t think ours had many bottles past 1yr, they had a lot of cheese and yoghurt which made up for it.

mondaytosunday · 21/05/2024 20:33

One year olds don't need formula or milk. If they are getting calcium and protein from other sources it's fine. My sister never drank milk after she was weaned (she's a 64 year old doctor now).

I give my toddler dd this and she loves it. Cow's milk is only designed for calves, it's quite messed up that humans drink it if you really think about it.

lonerr · 21/05/2024 20:59

Thanks all - definitely dropping the night feed from tonight and will try her with a bottle when she wakes up. It's hard to know if you're doing the right thing as a first time mum and you just want the best for your babies!

Milk is only one source so yoghurt cheese etc count this chart may help you.

InTheRainOnATrain · 21/05/2024 21:22

Over 1s shouldn’t drink from bottles, it’s terrible for their teeth. If it was a strong sleep association I’d understand not wanting to mess with that but there’s no way I’d be encouraging a bottle they weren’t fussed on. Dairy from the diet is fine, they don’t even need to drink milk if they’re consuming cheese, yoghurt, milk on cereal and in dishes. So I would chuck all the bottles in the bin, offer milk in a cup tomorrow morning and no big deal of she doesn’t want it. And definitely no dream feed because those sugars from the milk will be sat on her teeth all night. If she tends to wake hungry, try cereal or banana before bed, and brush teeth afterwards.

Abbyant · 24/05/2024 08:20

If she’s eating yogurts and cheese pretty regularly she’ll be fine, sometimes we have to listen to our little people and she’s telling you she doesn’t want a morning bottle. I wouldn’t be worried she’s eating well and she’s getting a night time bottle.

Mamabear48 · 24/05/2024 10:00

i would drop the dream feed. At 1 they don’t need it. Might help her drink the morning bottle if not I wouldn’t worry it will be fine just offer a cup of milk at morning snack time

beanii · 24/05/2024 10:01

Just give it to her in food instead 🤷🏻‍♀️

She doesn't need a bottle in the morning - cereal with milk is fine

maw1681 · 24/05/2024 10:45

She doesn't need it and she's telling you she doesn't want it.
Try giving her milk in a cup to drink with her breakfast instead and make sure she's having a "milky" breakfast like cereal or porridge and a yogurt

lonerr · 24/05/2024 13:26

I have dropped the bottles altogether as she is rejecting them in the day whatever time I offer her some, so I'm just trying to carry on giving her dairy in her food instead.

OP posts:
lonerr · 24/05/2024 13:28

Also I was offering her a morning bottle because she doesn't like cereal, so I can't give her that with milk.
She has cheese most lunch times and we incorporate it into most of her evening meals anyway so I assume this is enough for her.
