My one year old has never slept well, but seems to be getting worse. He has always woken about 2-3 times a night but is currently waking nearly every hour. He feeds but if doesn't always settle him. He seems in some sort if discomfort. Have tried calpol and infacol but not real improvement. help!

Our twins were bad sleepers waking up every hour for milk until we used 'Solving your childs sleep problems' by Dr. Richard Ferber (not everyone likes his methods) and they were sleeping through the night for 12 hours after three days. Basically he says that after 6 months babies dont need to 'eat' during the night. They should be sleeping and that it is just a habit that needs to be broken. We just gave them less and less milk each time until nothing and also did the 'crying out' technique which means going in every 5, 10 15 minutes but never picking them up etc until they learn to fall bak to sleep by themselves without the need for milk or anything else. You may know all this already! My ;ittle boy also had reflux for ages and had to take infacol all the time but it didnt work. He just grew out of it. If your son is waking up alot in the night it may be nothing more than him waking up (as they all do through the night but should be able to fall back aslep without your help) and he has learned that when he cries you will come and get him. I dont know!

a friend of mine had this recently with her DS and it turned out he had threadworm that was fairly harmless but uncomfortable at night. Go to GP for a check up, I'd say.

may be worth checking with GP that he doesn't have an ear infection, and also that his covers / room temp are right.

my DS1 wouldn't sleep through until 1yr, i refused him milk at night (he was eating and drinking lots in the day) but resorted to offering water instead if he wouldn't settle.

I always went in to pick him up for a cuddle, but did so in the dark, and didn't speak to him. Then i'd put him down, say 'goodnight baby' and go out again.

That did the trick.

Is it possible he's got used to being fed when he wakes up?
