thinking of trying to train DS soon and wondering if these things actually helped anyone or if it's all just a gimmick!

nope, just ditch the diapers and go into pants right away. buy lots and lots - cheap ones, as you might end up throwing some poopy ones away

ZoeC · 04/04/2008 13:20

No, I have afternoons where it gets too much and we use them to give us both a break from the enduring nightmare that is potty training, but I try not to use them too much as it will sometimes make things worse for a bit. She sometimes just sees them as a nappy, although not always.

MNersanonymous · 04/04/2008 17:28

Too similar to nappies. If you want extra protection, especially when out, get cloth/ reusable training pants - try Boots or Bambino Mio. I don't know why more people don't use them. They're much more like proper pants, definitely feel uncomfy when wet but offer a little protection to soak up accidents.

NO

if potty training they wear cloth pants

if not bothered where they wee / poo you wear nappies

Just another expensive gimmick made up by the nappy companies to relieve parents who are desparate to potty train their child of their money.

I used cloth training pants and cheap normal pants.

The training pants were fab as they held in any accidents and reduced the need to wash 10 pairs of jeans etc every day. They aren't designed to be ultra absorbant though and your DS will feel wet. They wash very well and are realtively cheap to buy.

ChristinePlushPants · 05/04/2008 15:26

You're better off either getting a heap of cheap pants, or some washable trainer pants, Bright Bots are very good and not ridiculously priced either (typically around £3.95 a pair). We used these with ours and found they took a lot of the stress out of it especially when we had to go out somewhere.

Did try disposable trainer pants on dd1 and she just thought they were a nappy, so gave up on that pretty sharpish as those things are not cheap!

MissPaulaYates · 05/04/2008 15:27

i just take them out of nappies and that is it
never do pull ups or anything else just bite the bullet

lilQuidditchKel · 05/04/2008 18:30

ok, so you just take them out of nappies. put a potty in the room. hope they use it?

we did get a lot of pointing at the nappy today while he was wearing it and pooing/weeing...

dur, what's the difference between cloth training pants, pants, washable trainer pants, and disposable trainer pants?

no, didn't help at all.

We just used normal every day, run of the mill, 7 pack for £4 from woolies pants.

imho the child really needs to experience the overwhelmingly negative sensation of wet pants and wee trickling down leg into socks.

If they are ready to train, and they have a day or so of squelchy socks and beloved new Upsy Daisy pants being taken off and put in the washing machine, they they are much more likely just to crack on and use the potty.

Slubberdegullion · 05/04/2008 18:59

re technique (seeing as it is fresh in my mind as I have just finished training dd2 over Easter)

Lots of potties all over the house (when they need to go, they need to go NOW, no use having potty downstairs if imminent wee is happening in the bedroom)

Sit child on potty frequently (4+ times an hour). read to them on potty, watch telly on potty, run bath with them on potty, have long chats about rabbits on potty etc etc)

sooner or later something (should) happen in the potty

Have OVERWHELMING congratulations and joy on standby for first success. We have used 1 tiny little easter egg plus sticker on sticker chart for each success.

repeat

repeat

repeat

If nothing doing after 3 days, stop and leave it for a few months and then try again

HTH

we didn't try them so couldn't really comment on them but my feeling was they they were an expensive gimmick. If you're going to do just do it & go to Asda & buy loads of cheap pants with character on them And make a big fuss 1st thing in the morning 'ooh you don'y wear nappies any more (only at bedtime) you wear pants now' etc.

You need to keep sitting them on the potty / loo for the 1st couple of days and the minute they squeeze a bit of wee out go mad with the praise. We gave DS a choc button, some people do stickers....whatever works really. If they want the reward they'll try to go loads & that will get them used to using bladder muscles & the whole concept of loo or potty.

MissPaulaYates · 05/04/2008 21:03

agree with slubber as we trained ds4 three weeks ago and all credit to him it has been an absolute doddle

we have 3 storey house and a potty on each

we reward ( chocolate buttons ! sorry but it is worth it for the first few days - lots of ott screaming etc and delight at the sight of wee and poo)

No pull ups just pants and although for day 1 and 2 i do not really advise any pants ( easy access to potty etc) for a more stubborn or difficult too train child - the nasty wet sensation does teach the when they have done something imo

NO turning back - i sit them on a towl in the car and do take the potty to other folks houses and yes toddler group just for first week

its a bite the bullet thing. one of mine i dilly dallied and then put him back in nappies for another couple of months

My failing not his!

MissPaulaYates · 05/04/2008 21:04

ooh yes - plus when you first start the training PLY the child with drinks -gets a few days worth of pavlovian training into one!

lilQuidditchKel · 06/04/2008 11:14

gimmick if you want him to start to feel a little bit of whats going on try some tissue in his nappy..when you go to potty train just go straight to pants.
