Any swimming-with-baby advice from y'all?

I believe the generally rule of thumb is, as soon as they've had their 3rd lot of jabs, its fine.

avenanap · 03/04/2008 23:24

I think you can, they normally say after the first set of injections (I think). I remember taking my ds at this age but he's 8 now and the advice they give out may have changed.

Or it could have been the last ones

Take him! Enjoy it and have fun! He'll probably cry like a banshee the first time so be prepared and don't stay in long, take easy clothes for you and him to get in and out of, take someone with you if you can, to make it easier!

snottyshoulders · 03/04/2008 23:26

They say you don't have to wait for any injections now, some Mums prefer to wait till 3 months after 1st set of jabs though.

Tommy · 03/04/2008 23:27

go for it! I took DS1 from about 14 weeks. Only do about 10-15 mins to start with a make sure you keep him warm when you get out.

snottyshoulders · 03/04/2008 23:28

Oh and sometimes the pool temperature can change day to day, so if they're having a 'cool' day in the pool he might get cold really quickly (stay in 5-10 mins, if warmer make it 20 mins max first time) so take towel in with you and wrap him up as soon as you get out and get him dressed quick.

Seona1973 · 04/04/2008 12:27

we started going from 3 months but our sports centre does have a training pool that is a few degrees warmer then the main pool so ds didnt get cold so quickly.

We are thinking of taking our 21W DS swimming but what do you actually do with them in the pool? I was thinking just hold him round the middle and waft him about? (probably not a recognised swimming term). Or is there more to it than that? Hopefully we'll have lessons in a few months but we are about to move so no point signing up locally with a long waiting list.

Tommy · 04/04/2008 16:58

that's what I do lavendermist! Take him to a deeper bit so his shoulders are under the water too and just jump around and swish him about. Your legs will really ache by the end because you'll be crouching all the time but it will be great fun!

I took my 11 month old when she was 8 weeks old after jabs. Just moved about with her and then moved on to one of those blow up floating trainers seats which she loved.

Our local pool has a 'baby splash' on Sunday morning which is just for parents and toddlers - pool temp is up quite a few notches for the little ones so it is very pleasant - may your local pool has something similar?

You can take them as soon as you like, you don't have to wait for jabs according to waterbabies - we started taking ds for lessons at four months with them and he loves it.

If you phone the pool you're planning on going to, they should be able to tell you what temperature the pool is at - ideally it should be 30 or above but this isn't common. If its below 30, then you can buy wetsuits for them which do a great job of keeping them warm and unlike most things for small babies, they do grow with them quite well.... There's some info on them here, we got the splashabout one.

Its worth having a browse around the waterbabies site just for the info that is on there - and no, I don't work for them, just a v happy customer !
