5 year old daughter suddenly got bald spot on her head!! Help

Basically i noticed a small bald spot on my daughter's head about a week ago. Just above her fringe, a week before i noticed she was at the park and jumped up to grab this mini zip wire thing and banged her head. It caused a bump and bruise exactly in the same spot as the hair loss!

Im so worried right now that its something like alopecia and all her hair will fall out. She has beautiful long hair down to her bum with curls in the ends and its so so precious to her. I need reassurance because im concerned right now

It may be 'only hair' but I think most people wouldn't want to go bald. Keep an eye on it op and fingers crossed it doesn't get any worse xx

Hi, my 3 year old little girl formed a bald spot in a similar place on her head I looked through her hair last week and saw another one similar size. Booked a gp app who said she has the start of alopecia, and nothing we can do. Just wait to see how much falls out before they would consider treating it. obviously going out of our mind with worry we booked a private app for her last Friday. Saw a dermatologist who advised the gp was correct she does have alopecia, but the word alopecia means hair loss and its not as extreme as what it sounds as when we think of alopecia we instantly think she will lose all hair which is very rare in children. He advised her hair follicles are still in tact and look healthy, so it should grow back but can continue happening ll over her head and its an unpredictable auto immune disease that no one knows how bad it will get. He's given us some topical cream to use to help the hair growth and advised to keep an eye on it. I've found another one this evening and I'm devestated for her if she is going to get lots of little patches. I'm hoping she doesn't get too many all at once which will affect the appearance massively as hair for a little girl is super important! I would certainly go to the gp and get it checked if you're concerned! Also, I've been putting castor oil on the patches which helps with hair growth too :)

Hi @AJEA I just wanted to reach out.
When I was about 6 or 7 I was diagnosed with alopecia areata and had bald patches on my head. Now I'm an adult I don't really remember feeling upset or sad about it - it didn't give me any trauma. My hair grew back eventually and I spent my teenage and university years with hair. Sadly it all fell out again when I was 23 and hasn't properly grown back since. I now wear wigs.
Recently a new drug is being used for alopecia that seems promising and they are also researching it all the time. Try to find comfort that even if your daughters hair comes out, with the rate of science I would imagine it would only affect part of her life before reliable medicine can help grow it back.
xx

The original picture isn't very good but theres defiantly a bald spot, the bruise went away over a week ago from the zip wire incident.
The bald spot isn't any bigger but looks a little redder than last week.

So far I've not found any others in her hair. But i will try and have a better look tomorrow if she'll let me xx

My GD had this age 4 after having covid….it was worse than your photo….easy to hide it with a pony tail though….it soon grew back ….no dramas

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 20/05/2024 22:36

Keep an eye out that she isn't pulling it out.
If she is, you need to retrain that behaviour asap. Speaking as a lifelong puller :(

@LLLTB as someone who went totally bald in the space of three months, i dont think that looks very serious. in my area, they dont really start treatment for about a year. the modern treatment which has just come about is not what i want to even consider. i have a wig which i have worn once to a wedding but i did not take my fascinator off. the wig is horrendous. have not been anywhere else in a year. try massaging rosemary oil into her scalp.

rinseandrepeat1 · 20/05/2024 22:55

So sorry you had a negative experience with a wig @allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld but you must have been unlucky as there are AMAZING wigs out there now. I wear real hair wigs but the synthetic wigs are coming on leaps and bounds and are so realistic. Some of the synthetic ones can even be straightened / curled. Trick is to research and visit a reputable wig shop to try lots on and they give you advice and will help find one that suits. You will be VAT exempt too if you have alopecia.

I agree about the modern treatment, I think it's early days and am sitting watching how the treatment goes for a few years before I think about it.

I once fell and hit my head on the footpath, and lost a clump of hair. Apparently it is quite common, something to do with the hair follicles being damaged. My hair eventually grew back, and my bald patch was bigger than hers.

Gonnaenodaethathen · 02/06/2024 00:35

Keep taking regular photos to check if it is getting bigger. My daughter had a small patch just above the nape of her neck in August of last year. She has now lost about 70% of her hair. It is growing back with help of topical steroid and we are awaiting a referral for dermatology. She is 5 and it came totally out of the blue. I wish people wouldn't be so quick to dismiss. You've obviously noticed a change and are concerned. Try not to panic too much, but do keep an eye on it x

foreverhopeful1uk · 02/06/2024 06:43

How quickly did it grow? My son has had the same spot that hasn't changed size and it's been little over 2 weeks but there doesn't seem to be any regrowth just yet x

LLLTB · 17/06/2024 09:35

hey everyone here to update you all on my daughters bald spot. so basically I have noticed some hairs starting to regrow but slowly which is fine at least there's something right! @foreverhopeful1uk

I did buy a couple of things from amazon which I think has really helped, first was one of those scalp stimulating brushes and the other was this romsmary oil which Is already diluted and ready to use, I just popped a little on once or twice a week and it seems to have helped. I've put the links down below as its easier than screenshots on here. honestly im so relived something has helped, fingers crossed it keeps on helping, ill try to get a photo of here bald/regrowth later today. 😅
