Headlice Dilemma..Help!

Pollygear · 16/05/2024 12:13

My DS11 has returned home from school with lice a couple of days ago. His hair is pretty long and curly and he refuses to sit and have it combed/treated.

I’m worried about them spreading to the rest of us. His stepmum has told me that her sons also have them and she is buzzing their heads. She also wants to do his when he visits his dad, do I let her? I suspect he must’ve caught them from them when he was at his dads 🙄🙄

I would say that the deal is he can have long hair provided he sits and has it combed/treated. If not, it gets cut.

(And I would apply that to a girl as well)

He doesn't need a buzz cut, that's a bit rash!!

He is 11, not 20. You're the parent, just tell him he needs his hair treating for head lice and that's that.

Go to the chemist and ask them which formula is best for head lice, I also recommend the metal nit comb that you can buy, it's essential for combing out the nits and their eggs.

well, either he does or you’ll have to have it shaved, I guess?
Are you just letting him go to school without treating him?

When you say he refuses... Is he NT?
Either way, he doesn't get to refuse to deal with this. Treating and combing, or cut shorter to make it easier (doesn't have to be a full buzz, just short enough to easily comb).

Try Hedrin mousses overnight. Wash out in morning. Do it 3 weeks in a row.

You’re a parent. Act like one.

MumChp · 16/05/2024 12:36

Treatment for headlice isn't an option for a child... be a grown up and sort it.

devildeepbluesea · 16/05/2024 12:36

“he refuses to sit and have it combed/treated.”

WTF? He’s a kid with nits. You’re the parent, you compel him to be treated or he shaves his hair.

piscesangel · 16/05/2024 12:38

Parents like you are absolutely taking the piss out of the rest of us. You've known for days he is walking around spreading lice as he goes and you have let him, with only a concern for him spreading to the rest of your family?! You are incredibly selfish and need to do some parenting

ChangeAgain2 · 16/05/2024 12:43

You can't apportion blame. You can't know that he got nits visiting his dad. The same way she can't blame your kid for spreading it to her children. Treat the nits and wash all bedding, pillows and soft toys. It's not about blaming someone else just get on with dealing with it.

mindutopia · 16/05/2024 12:44

He doesn't get a choice. My dd has long, very thick, curly hair. It gets brushed regularly and nit combed regularly as prevention. It's just what you have to do.

That said, cutting everyone's hair with the same clippers seems like a great way to spread nits around! So that doesn't seem like a great solution either. They leap and jump onto long hair, but once they're there, it doesn't matter if hair is long or short, you still have nits and they won't go away just because you cut hair. They live at the scalp, not at the ends of the hair.
