Holiday with 7 month old - help!

Morning

taking DD away start of June for 7 nights. she’ll be 7 months by then. For those who have taken their little ones away:

  1. did you need baby grows / sleep suits? I’ve packed one for each night as my thinking is if air con is on in the room she might get chilly. But now second guessing as she’ll have a sleeping bag as well.
  2. how many vests did you need? My plan was to just pop her in vests round the pool, but my mum has said rompers would be better. That being said how many vests would you need - I was going to pack 14 but not sure if that’s going overboard!
  3. last but not least, how many swim nappies? I’ve got 8 as assumed she’s probably only be in the pool once a day, but am I wrong on that front?
thanks!!

Will you have access to a washing machine?

waitingforthedayicansleep · 16/05/2024 09:23

We will not. I can do a hand wash but if there’s any poonami’s I don’t think that will go far lol!

where are you going? honestly most places will have a laundrette somewhere if you really need to wash things - or yeah just handwash stuff!

You are worrying too much - really it will be fine - i usually have a few suits and vests and rompers and maybe 2 jumpers, throw in a pack of swim nappies, hat and sun cream and a swim suit or 2!

when we were in mallorca when my daughter was 5 months it was sooo hot that she basically slept in just a nappy half the time

you can get nappies and swim nappies there im sure if you were to run out!

do you have a snooze shade or something similar to keep the sun off?

im about to go off to thailand for a month with a 4 month old and 3 year old and over the years have really calmed down about this stuff - i feel like you can find most things you might need wherever you go in the world :)

also if you can find a laundrette id totally recommend using it last day so you come home with mostly clean clothes - saves a load of hassle when you get back - way less piles of laundry to get through haha

The best thing I took on holiday with me when mine your LOs age was a little blow up pool with a sun canopy over the top. We took his clothes off, swim nappy on and let him kick about in that. He loved it!

Take a pack of swim nappies and if needs be get some more there!

I am more of an overpacker than a chilled anything goes parent so for your questions:

  1. Unless she poos herself every night, you probably don't need a new sleepsuit every night? I would take 3-4, and a couple of sleeping bags.
  2. I usually take at least one vest per day and some extras. It does depend on what else you are dressing them in and how hot it is, but vest vs romper is much of a muchness in my eyes. Romper maybe provides slightly more sun protection due to having legs but at 7m you want to keep them in the shade as much as possible anyway.
  3. I'd take a full pack of swim nappies as you might be in and out of the pool and I always bin them once baby is done with it, so might need more than one per day. Plus if a poo goes in it you need to change it anyway.
Then again, if packing space isn't an issue then I'd chuck in whatever you want! I'd rather bring back 7 pristine unworn outfits than be faffing around handwashing stuff on holiday.

Have a lovely holiday!!

@Fupoffyagrasshole Wow Thailand with your children - how amazing! I am jealous lol.

great idea re laundrette before we leave, might have to be done given I’m dreading all the washing when we return!

thanks for advice….

@lotsofpeoplenametheirswords thank you, I do have one too, can’t wait to see her in it lol.

@reabies That made me lol about pooing herself every night, she doesn’t, so I guess I have gone a bit extreme on the baby grows!
absolutleynwill be in shade and will likely he inside during the hottest times anyway as I struggle in the heat!
i have always been an overpacker, feel I’m taking everything bar the kitchen sink now I have a baby!!

It obviously depends on the weather where you are. I would use what you'd use at home in summer if you're going somewhere warm, but bring layers. I took my 8 month old to Barcelona and it was definitely hot during the day (25C), but cooler at night. If a/c, then room will be as cool or cooler than in the UK. So just pack what you'd use here for those temps. Do bring light layers/sunhat to keep sun off bare skin during the day as much as possible (and maybe sure you have a sunshade/parasol for pushchair).

I've only ever used reusable swim nappies, but I assume you have an outside cover (you probably only need one of these as they dry quickly) and then I'd bring several per day if you are using disposable, because you'll want to change whenever you get out of the pool for any length of time (as otherwise just sitting in water logged nappy for hours). Personally, I'd go with reusable inner nappies with a disposable liner for any poos. That way you only need two as you can put one out to dry while you use the dry one.

I'd bring several changes of clothes a day, unless you will have access to a washing machine. I found that holiday flats were not as clean as at home and a crawling baby on a not totally clean hard floor made for a lot of dirty clothes and changes.

Like PP not that many vests. I would imagine you're best investing in a couple of rash suits/ all in ones for around the pool/ beach. They usually have built in spf and can be rinsed and dried overnight
