And feeling a bit confused... are they supposed to be eating solids at this stage or not? Our baby boy is also 9mo with just two front teeth but we've been giving him finger food...

Babies have been given non-pureed foods for millennia... Blenders didn't exist in 1532 ...

For large patches of history babies didn't start solids until much later, in some cultures not until around 2 or 3.
The early feeding is generally in more recent history, whilst other cultures gave things such as ground grains mixed with water and similar as an early addition to milk.

My youngest did blw. I didn’t set out to do it, but she was so different to my 2 boys. Once they started solids (and by solids I mean pureed food) that’s what they wanted. Very quickly went to 3 meals a day. By 9 months it was lumpy solids, but not large chunks. Like a smooth sauce with risoni pasta or rice. Or vegetables just mashed not smooth.

my daughter didn’t like purées and would happily just breastfeed. Eventually she started on finger food. But always soft, nothing throat sized and anything like fruit would be so she could hold it and chew. Definitely would not have given a chunk of pineapple. Like a pp said it would have been a larger piece she could hold.

We did both. Finger foods are pretty mainstream from 6 months imo. And I'm sure I've read that it actually decreases the risk of choking because they're in a state more able to learn earlier on.

But some babies can't handle it for various developmental or medical issues and if the parents had outright stated to the nursery that their child was to be fed purees only then I can understand their anger.
