DD is ebf, 99th centile for height she’s always been so long

shes in a mix of 3-6 and 6-9 (babygrows for this size and vests) and I’m paranoid she’s too big

ive heard you can’t overfeed a bf baby is this true? She doesn’t take a dummy so uses me as comfort and used to feed a lot it’s only evening now and I want to put her on formula for different reasons but scared it’ll make her gain too much weight and a doctor would be concerned ?

any tips please

Breastfed babies can be on the chunkier side as breastmilk is impacted by your diet and so it can be more fatty. However, once you start weaning and then they start to eat properly, it’s not unusual for babies to drop a percentile or two.

Honestly I’m sure she’s absolutely perfect. My DS was born on the 1st centile and is now flying high on the 98th! He’s 10 months old (9 months corrected) and he’s in 12-18 months. He was BF and then formula fed. He’s weaned now and eats like a horse. His weight has slowed significant now he’s crawling and pulling up. He doesn’t sit still it will all even out 😊

Enjoy your baby being the weight she's at. Unless the health visitor or whoever it is that weighs babies, says something, you shouldn't worry.

I look back at my dc's weight as a baby and wish they had the same weight now, as they've lost a bit of weight since. I bf as well.

Fat babies are healthy babies. The average for a 4-month-old is 14lbs so 18lbs isn't bad at all.

Fat babies can fight off infection better and be more resilient to cold weather. A baby with fat reserves is a really good thing.

Keep checking in with your doctor but you shouldn't get concerned about weight until they are much older.

So relax mumma - a chubby baby is a blessing. You are clearly feeding them well!

My first born DS was in the the 9th percentile and my now 3 month old DD is in the 91st and currently 7kg. I was so worried about him being so little for his age so a lot less worried about her for that reason I think as at least I know she’s feeding well.

Health visitors have told me that it’s nothing to worry about being in the higher percentiles so I don’t think you need to worry. Get advice from them if you’re concerned though and I’m sure they can put your mind at rest.

I am getting fed up with the ‘Wow, she’s only 3 months. She’s so big’ comments now though!

Can some just gain really quick and then steady off / not gain as much as they grow?

I had an eating disorder after being a fat kid and I look back and I could’ve had more done with me and better food choices (family would give me adult size takeaway and portions at like 7/8 years old, not much exercise done) but it’s made me so scared for my little girl I don’t want her being as sad as I was and doing what I did I’m now a 5’6 very slim adult and actually struggle to gain weight? So it’s crazy. But going through that in childhood still affects me now and I would hate that for her

Honestly I know it seems a huge deal now but just forget about your babies weight! It’s not a big deal and it certainly won’t be in the future either. You can’t starve the poor thing or put it on a diet so just put it out of your mind.

my youngest son was a big baby, always eating and was 90th centile, he’s now six and under the school nurse because he’s so thin and under weight, so it certainly won’t mean your big baby will be a big child.

NormalAuntFanny · 14/05/2024 13:44

Mine were all absolute bunters at that age, all slim now

One minor illness and that fat baby will be thin in a few days. Breast fed fat is really good!

It sounds like she's perfectly in proportion – 18 lb is about 98th centile for weight (or a bit under, depending on whether she's just turned 4 months or nearly 5), so matches her 99th centile length.
