When is it safe for child to sleep on front?

As the title says really, when is it ok? Is there a definitive age?

My DS is now 13m and recently he has ended up sleeping on his front (oddly with his legs and arms under him). He can fully roll/crawl etc. However when he sleeps he’s deeply asleep so I’m just concerned about SIDS. So far when I see him I turn him over onto his side but should I just leave him now he’s old enough to correct himself?

I think it's safe long before 13 months - once mine were getting there themselves and able to roll back I left them to it. Remember by 13 months most babies are in their own rooms so their parents aren't even fully aware of all of the truly batshit ways their DC decides to sleep Grin

It’s fine as soon as they can roll over and get there themselves so not exactly a definite age but it’s probably about 4-5 months for most babies and definitely ok for your toddler! 13 month olds can safely sleep with a duvet, you really don’t need to be worried about them just getting into a comfy sleeping position, or SIDS at all really.

As soon as they can roll forward and back. My DS has been sleeping on his front since about 5 or 6 months. He also tucks his arms under himself 😊

As soon as they can roll themselves back and forward.

It was a pain as my DS was so much happier on his tummy from birth, he was an awful sleeper and I think he would have slept so much better on his front.

@neleh87 Mine is an arm tucker too. He still does it now.

Thankyou, I will stop worrying then. He’s in his own room, I just look at the monitor when I go to the toilet in the night or early morning and on occasion I find him on his front, in an odd yoga pose (His bum is in the air).

As soon as they can roll onto their front/back independently. So about 6 months I think.

My daughter still does the arm/leg tuck at 4. I call it her roast chicken position.

CelesteCunningham · 14/05/2024 09:53

Aw, head down bum up. A classic. My nearly 4 yo still does it sometimes.

Sprogonthetyne · 14/05/2024 10:13

Once they can role both ways reliablely, they can sleep however they position themselves. Still put him down on his back, but if he turns himself then it's OK to leave him. I left mine to it from around 5-6 months, so I'm sure at 13 months he'll be fine.

Thanks everyone, it’s just helpful to know that lots sleep like that once they are fully capable of choosing their position and that it’s ok by this stage.

He slept mostly on his front last night. I readjusted him once onto his back and within minutes he was back on his front again. So I left him like that.

Oh ages ago. I was desperate to be able to put mine on his front as he slept so peacefully that way. Held off until 4 months. He slept so much better from that point on and still sleeps on his stomach now at 2 and a half.

It's a very natural position for them to sleep in.

My son. Is 2 and still loves to stick his bum in the air

ChickpeaPie · 16/05/2024 20:55

I sleep on my front. I’d be annoying if someone kept turning me over

DinnaeFashYersel · 16/05/2024 20:56

When they can roll over.

mitogoshi · 16/05/2024 20:58

As soon as they can move by themselves. Mine were running around by that age so no point trying to insist they slept a certain way

BurbageBrook · 16/05/2024 21:07

Whenever they can roll there by themselves.
