Be Aware Of CMPA!!

Hello,

I just wanted to make people aware of our journey with our beautiful 11 month old baby boy who suffers from CMPA and also had tongue tie.

We have 2 children and our second (now 11 months), has had an awful first 11 months of life. From when he was born he hasn't been comfortable, he was diagnosed with Bronchitis when he was 2 weeks old, from then on there wasn't a month that went by where he wasn't in hospital. He was diagnosed with reflux, colic, croup, gastroenteritis - you name it.

Each day he would scream for hours and hours, never sleeping for longer than 30 minutes at a time, I was told this was just colic and it would pass. During this point I also had to look after my 2 year old son, so life felt like it was getting the better of me. I would break down A LOT, and felt so much mom guilt for my toddler. My mom was amazing and would help out.

At 12 weeks old I took our baby to a tongue tie specialise who said he had the worst case of tongue tie she'd ever seen and the following week it was snipped.

From this point I thought it was going to be a turning point, but our little one constantly suffered with congestion, breathing problems, hives, runny nose etc and despite asking doctors if it was CMPA I was told it wasn't.

After a few more hospital says and months of sleepless nights, constantly driving our little one around in the car for hours during the night just so that he could get some sleep - I booked a private allergy test and it came back that he has CMPA. Since this moment we cut all dairy out of his diet, switched his milk to Neocate, he has been a completely different child.

Our little one was overlooked because he gained weight and didn't look like a miserable baby.

If your little one seems to always have a cold, cough and seems to have phlegm all of the time, I urge you get an allergy test. It might be nothing, or it might be everything. The quality of my babies life has drastically changed, i'm told that the milk ladder journey is a long way off for my little one because of how severe his allergy is, but we're on the road to a better path.

Also, if you know anyone who's baby has CMPA, give them a hug, take their screaming baby off them for a few hours and let them have a moment to breathe.

Thanks so much for sharing op. I often wondered if my little one was similar though not as extreme thankfully. She just wouldn’t gain weight at the start, though thankfully is now. She is six months and forever congested, still not a good feeder at all and still very refluxy. Always a snotty nose and bit of a cough. She would still be small for her age but not enough that she is constantly weighed the way they did at the start. She struggles with the teats on the bottles above the newborn size. We have asked could it be either but we were pretty much dismissed and no real checks done. We were just told to set an alarm every three hours for feeds. She constantly poops but we were told it was normal also. She is just so different to my other kids and they never struggled to gain weight ect!

It took until 17 weeks for my daughter to be diagnosed and I thought that was long enough. Good weight gain but she still moved up percentiles when I removed dairy. GP told me that babies that react through breastmilk get diagnosed in hospital and as she didn't need to go to hospital she couldn't be reacting to my breastmilk - true for lactose intolerance, less so for cmpa
She ended up with 20 food allergies as well as severe silent reflux the GP only treated her mild-moderate regular reflux.
She didn't reach symptom free for allergies until 15 months and her reflux goes in and out of being controlled by meds. She's nearly 4 now and showing no signs of outgrowing either her allergies or reflux

We we're dismissed with both of our little one's symptoms. I had to be his DR and diagnose myself and then go private, which would confirm. If you have got other kids you know what is normal and what isn't. Defo follow your gut as if you think something isn't right, it often isn't. unfortunately the NHS isn't what it used to be for various reasons and we were fortunate enough to be able to afford to go private. We paid £180 for an allergy test and it was worth every penny.

The cold, cough and phlegm symptoms fall into the IgE allergy, which means it'll show up if your little one has an allergy.

Wow, that's a lot of allergies! Seems like it's been an up hill battle for you as well then.
I can't put my finger on why so many babies have to suffer when it's such an easy test to do.
Have you have the dietitian talk about the milk ladder etc?

My daughter has delayed allergies so they don't show up on tests. We had to do controlled removal and reintroductions.
We have done the milk ladder twice but she fails on pieces of malted milks the size of a grain of rice!

Non-IgE then, making life a lot harder for you and your daughter!
Luckily now there are a lot of alternatives (mainly soy based, which my Son can't have as he's also allergic to soy), but the allergy market seems to be constantly evolving thankfully.
Hopefully your daughter will soon grow a tolerance to those foods.

Unfortunately her allergies collide often! We pretty much are restricted to oatly barista for milk as she's also allergic to soya, coconut and pea protein which is in all alpro oat milk!
Yeah nonIGE just trial and error which was slow and infuriating but we got there! The day to day is easier than IGE but getting the list was probably harder.

My teen was very similar, we discovered cmpa when weaning at 6 months.

The good news he outgrew the allergy by 3 after several attempts at the milk ladder and is now a hulking 6ft milk monster!!!

Hi, can you let me know what allergy test you did/ where you purchased it please? My LO has a rash on her face that looks like CMPA, can be fussy after feeds and takes her a while to get up wind. I’m exclusively BF but want to rule out a possible milk allergy, thanks!
