Do you clean dc's teeth after bedtime milk?

DD, 2.9, has milk before bed and I don't clean her teeth afterwards. We clean them in the bath earlier. Is this going to be detrimental to her teeth. I have noticed some super white patches on some of her teeth.

We are going for her first dental appointment next week but just wondered what other people did.

yes I do, whilst it may seem less bad than say juice milk can still rot teeth. I'd try to change the order you do things to be honest.

DS1 brushes teeth, into PJs, drinks milk, gets in bed. (he's 21mths)

We try to encourage DS1 to drink all his milk before his bath when he brushes his teeth, but sometimes he does have a little milk left which he likes to finish while DH reads him a bedtime story.

PinkTulips · 03/04/2008 15:45

used to do it the way you do but changed as i wasn't sure it was good enough.

ds 20 months still bf right before sleep though so not sure if that's also bad for his teeth

imaginewittynamehere · 03/04/2008 15:49

After milk here too. I'd change it if you can too tbh. The tooth brushing has become a major part of dd's bedtime routine - she runs to the bathroom shouting "Tees Tees Tees"

fairylights · 03/04/2008 15:53

ooh crumbs, never thought about that! Ds is 17 mo and has a cup of milk right before bed but after teethbrushing.. hmmmm may have to change that.

MrsTittleMouse · 03/04/2008 15:59

We brush teeth after the milk. We used to do it before as she used to scream blue murder and we thought that that wasn't very restful - better to let her get drowsy from the milk. We were wrong. She was actually screaming blue murder because the teeth cleaning was delaying her drinking her precious milk! Now that we do it when she has a fully stomach she is much better.

jelliebelly · 03/04/2008 16:04

we clean after bedtime milk but ds also has a couple of "super white patches" on his teeth - not sure what causes these though.

Weegle · 03/04/2008 16:15

we clean after milk, well he has milk then bath and the last thing before story is teeth. I remember reading that the lactose in milk can also rot teeth. DS 21 months and been doing it that way for a long time.

He also, I noticed yesterday, has a super white patch on one tooth - don't know what that means!

DaddyJ · 03/04/2008 16:32

We brush before dd has her bf and I keep meaning
to check on MN whether breast milk has a detrimental effect on toddler teeth.

Does anyone know for certain?

Alishanty · 03/04/2008 17:47

My ds is 20 mths and for a while now has been having a beaker of milk downstairs before bed. We then brush his teeth afterwards and he goes straight down after a story. He was bf until 12 mths, he only got his first tooth at 9 mths but we used to clean them before his bf as he used to fall asleep on the breast. He stopped falling asleep with milk at around 13 mths, I didn't attempt to stop him.

Seona1973 · 03/04/2008 19:53

ds (18months) drinks his beaker of milk downstairs and gets his teeth brushed upstairs just before bed. Could the white patches be fluorosis (sp!) from the fluoride in toothpaste?

Hillbilly · 03/04/2008 20:10

Thanks for all your replies.....

Seems like it's split down the middle but I think I should change the routine and brush after milk. It makes sense, I mean I brush my teeth last thing at night so why not the same for dd?

I will ask the dentist about the white patches and report back!

Tooth brushing last here too. When they were still BF though I did it before (as the BF sometimes got them off to sleep). Moving on to proper milk in a beaker has always been the cue to brush teeth last thing before bed!

Laugs · 03/04/2008 23:14

How about if you are breastfeeding? Do people still brush teeth first?

GrinningSoul · 03/04/2008 23:45

My understanding is that lactose (the sugar found in milk) is far less significant than other sugars (especially extrinsic ones - eg fruit juice) in the cause of dental decay. And some studies have found that it can prevent or repair early decay. Breast milk is thought to be more cariogenic (decay causing) than cow's milk, but if you're lucky like me your kids won't get teeth till they are 15 months old so it's not a problem!

Mine have never brushed their teeth after milk, and they don't have decay. But they're not a statistically significant sample...

NatalieJane · 03/04/2008 23:46

Yes I always brush their teeth after milk, have you ever drank milk after cleaning your teeth, it tastes vile!

puffling · 03/04/2008 23:56

This relates to a post i was going to start. DD is just 2 and we've never altered her routine. She has her bath then has her milk on my lap in semi-dark, then straight to sleep drowsy. I feel I should give her a more grown up routine but can't face the change. Anyone got experience of this? She's so used to milk sending her off to sleep, I imagine if i gave it to her downstairs, she'd fall asleep on the sofa.

DaddyJ · 04/04/2008 13:21

That's exactly the issue here:
half the time she falls asleep on the boob
so waking her up to brush her teeth would be an absolute nightmare scenario.

mylittlepudding · 04/04/2008 13:24

I do milk, teeth, sleep. Usually.

Maybe dental fluoridosis with the patches - are you using baby toothpaste?

WowOoo · 04/04/2008 13:35

We have milk after brushing. Milk sends them off to sleep. Seems I'm in the minority.

Hillbilly · 04/04/2008 15:21

Yes I use a children's toothpaste.

Cappuccino · 04/04/2008 15:23

daddyj my dentist once said breastmilk was bad to stay on dd's teeth at night

but it made her sleep

so I ignored it

oh well they get another set

claireybee · 04/04/2008 15:31

We do the same as the OP. DD often refuses to drink her milk until she is in bed then goes straight to sleep and I'm not going to get her back up to brush her teeth
