Hi, my daughter weighs 12lb 9oz
Gaining weight slowly. Was on the 50th percentile dropped couple centiles. So was having her weighed weekly but now 2 weekly. Because she is gaining. Not lost any weight. Plenty of wet/dirty nappies. Alert and developing really well. Happy smiley baby. She has dairy allergy and a soya allergy. Got dietician appointment coming up and a paeds appointment in a few months time. She is a dinky baby and been told she's fine. I don't know my reason for this post but to talk to other mams who's been in this situation. Its so very stressful and trying not to stress/worry. I've had to remove out my diet as breastfeeding and she is on dairy free formula. But refuses it when poorly or upset. It is hard. But she's so worth it.

Tia

We went through this with our son who had severe reflux (no allergies) although we didn't know what was causing the issue initially so we went down the no cows milk route for a bit. He was on weekly weigh ins as he dropped from 91st centile birth, to 25th centile so HV were concerned he lost so much weight and wasn't growing in line with the charts.

We went through months of trying different milks, thickeners etc, reflux meds, tongue tie, and eventually got he was referred to paediatrics . They advised early weaning at 4 months which we followed. Carobel helped from 4 months and and we saw a real difference from about 9 months when eventually he just grew out of the reflux and his weight shot up. No allergies detected.

he was soon back on on 91st/95th centile and stayed the same ever since, so you might find your daughter will end up back on her orginal birth centile or thereabouts in time.

Her reflux is definitely bad. Gavison and omeprezole didn't work at all. Thickener works to an extent. Still sicky but not as bad. I'm currently weaning her. My friends babies had allergies and she's having the same reactions as they are. I think she has both allergy and really bad reflux. I'm glad to hear your baby shot up! I'm hoping so. She was between 50th/75th born and landed on 50th and just dropping.

Thank you for your comment 😊

I'm in a similar boat. Baby born 80th centile. Dropped considerably before I was taken seriously, cut out dairy and such a different baby. They had me do a dairy reintroduction trial to confirm and poor baby actually lost weight, 150g lighter than when last weighed. Down below 20th centile.

I was told babies with CMPA tend to struggle with weight until weaned so went for it and baby really wanted solids anyway which made it much easier. 2 weeks in and hes on 2 meals and a snack a day. He's just over 5 months now.

I make my own porridge with oat or breastmilk - I bought oats and blended them as all the shop ones have dairy in. Add some fruit puree. Mango is a huge hit. Lunch is a snack. Dinner is vegetable time. I puree my own with a little oil and water. Loves root veg in particular - sweet potato, carrot, parsnip, squash etc. I started off buying pouches to see what he'd like to make more myself. Don't be afraid to mess with temperature. Mine won't eat the veg unless warmed, loves fruit purees cold!

FlyingHighFlyingLow · 12/05/2024 22:18

Should mention, if he's fed solids he throws up way less! So helps with the reflux. He is much more settled and I haven't had him officially weighed yet but home scales suggest he's gaining and slowly working up the centiles again. By my weighing he's back up to 35th centile.

No problem , it's difficult dealing with a reflux baby and it's hard not to worry when they aren't putting on the weight as expected. I just wanted to share my experience in that the situation may be temporary, but the main difference I suppose is that my son doesn't have any allergies, his was purely reflux related.

Its so worrying isn't it. Its good (its not) to read others going through the same thing. Its a proper head fuck. Honestly never been so stressed ever. I'm so glad it's turned around for you and your son. I'll be making own porridge. Was given her readybrek and she's been reacting to it even tho its only got may contain milk on it. My health visitor said to avoid. Should of looked at the back of the box. I definitely won't and will give one at a time. She loves banana and blackberry so far

Its good to hear other situations and makes you feel less alone. Honestly it's been a right head fuck. And seeing her in pain all the time. It's awful 😥

@Superscientist she had no porridge yesterday and is a total different baby today. No arching in pain. Just full of smiles and giggles!

I have this niggly feeling that readybrek is a high risk may contain I tried a quick google but found nothing. Are you on Facebook? The cmpa group is a very helpful and knowledgeable group for these sorts of thing.

It could of course also be an oat allergy as oat is one of the top 14.

I am on Facebook. I will have a look thank you.

Will get some plain oats when I next go out and see how she reacts to that. As awful as this sounds I need to know before her appointments. She's got a paediatric appointment in August also

There is the main group and a breastfeeding group both of which had quite quick replies and a lot of content. There are other sub groups which I think are a bit slower - weaning, reintroduction and reflux and cmpa.

@Superscientist hi, thought id update and let you know tested her on peanut butter ice cream this morning about 45 mins had an explosive poo thought it might have been a coincidence as she hadn't pooed for 2 days. Gave her some more tonight half an hour later did a really watery diarrhoea and screamed a bit. Also sounds congested. So I think we have another to tick on the list 😥 going to stop testing now and just let the dietician know. And when I go to the paeds appointment.

Poor thing. Just keep things simple until you get to see paeds and dietician. I absolutely hated weaning trying to balance mine and her diet was an absolute nightmare especially as she didn't really eat. It will get easier! We only think about my daughter's allergies when we are doing a reintroduction the rest of the time we just fill the fridge with foods we know are safe and cook with them.

FlyingHighFlyingLow · 20/05/2024 12:43

Got booked into allergy clinic urgent referal for mid September, told I'd get a letter in the post. Letter arrived, and is a cancellation letter! No new date. No date on paediatric or dietician either. Thank god solids seems to have stabilised his weight. If I was waiting on NHS fuck knows what state he'd end up in!

catlady7 · 21/05/2024 20:56

Realised there was soy in the ice cream 🤦‍♀️ but my partner is allergic to nuts. Main one Almonds.

Gave her plain porridge and she's reacting to it 😥 @Superscientist

Hi, spoke to the dietician today. She's prescribed her a paste to add to food to give more calories. Said to test her on the plain oats again and again same reaction. She said its good that she's not dropped anymore and stayed on the 9th percentile. They're going to ring again in 6 to 8 weeks to see what her weight is and they'd like to see her to check weight again and her height. @Superscientist

It's good you have got some oversight m probably wise to give soya and oats a miss for not. You might need some advice once they get to 1 about appropriate substitutes but that's a future you problem.

It's great that they are holding a percentile and hopefully the paste will help - do double check the ingredients I've been caught out before when unsuitable things have been prescribed. My mum's dairy intolerant and was prescribed milk based meal replacement drinks by her dietician!

As you venture through weaning I would try to avoid foods that have more than one big allergens that isn't already on your safe list.

Also get yourself a list of food tried. I felt utterly demolished not long into weaning when a friend posted her babies first 100 foods. About 30 of the foods my daughter couldn't have - cheese was a there in multiple guises. I felt rubbish, I made my daughters list and we had managed about 30, at the time her confirmed exclusion list was about 7. It was such a boost to focus on the positives and foods we had introduced safely. We got to 100 foods about 2years of age but it was a much more sophisticated list and even included wood pigeon. The safe lists of foods are often more helpful for others too as a list of foods to avoid can be pretty daunting.

One day and week at a time!

Thinking it's gluten she's reacting to and not oats itself. Going to test her on oats that's are gluten free. It's the neocate one but will double check the ingredients. Will do thank you so much for your help. It's much appreciated. It's so hard being so restricted with food. I can imagine it felt awful. I'm just now expecting her to react to more foods. Oh wow wood pigeon. I bet it felt amazing. It is very daunting. I never had any issues with my son although he has started to get really red cheek with spots so I'm thinking I may have to do a food diary with him too.

Yep I'll keep that mantra in mind!

OP posts:
Superscientist · 23/05/2024 11:05

If you are going down the gluten free approach just be warned that a lot of the products use egg as the replacement binder so you might want to test egg first.

The best gluten free pasta in our opinion is the brown rice pasta in Sainsbury's

MaryMaryVeryContrary · 23/05/2024 11:12

Breastfed babies seem to be very allergic. My first was mix fed and reacts to nothing, my second was exclusively breastfed and has CMPA. You have to either be prepared to follow a punishing diet to see what she might be reacting to, or switch to hypoallergenic formula. It’s your choice, I cut dairy out and that was hard but doable, if it was multiple food groups I would’ve struggled and switched tbh.

MaryMaryVeryContrary · 23/05/2024 11:16

How long is she OP? What length of baby grow? Is she growing in length but just not chubby, if you see what I mean?
