Breakfast for 2 year old

I need ideas for breakfast because my 2 and 4 month year old seems to not want anything I give him. Usually I'm not too concerned about it because he tends to eat at least one good meal a day and a few snacks.

But there are two days a week he spends the morning at forest school from 8:30 until 11:30. They only have a small snack there and after I pick him up he eats a banana on the way home and is asleep by the time we get there. So his first meal after dinner the night before is at after 2pm when he wakes up.

He used to eat porridge in the morning but is refusing that now. He won't touch weetabix, might have one or two bites of toast or bread if I make him that. Refuses yogurt or any type fruit. No smoothies, healthy muffins or pancakes.

Wraps with melted cheese worked one day but not since.

He has an egg intolerance so that's also reduces some options.

The only things he might eat is a Ryvita crackerebread (but they only have 20 calories in them) or a piece of plain wrap bread.

The only thing I can be sure about is that he will drink milk so I tend to give him extra before we leave for forest school just so he has at least something.

Any healthy breakfast ideas that I haven't tried?

How about cereal? My daughter (2 years 3 months) only wanted to eat Cheerios for a month. I ordered her some healthy, non sugary ones from Amazon, but only Cheerios worked.
Now she's back on porridge and weetabix, but she still wants a tiny bowl of cereal with every breakfast - even when she doesn't eat it...

ZipZapZoom · 03/05/2024 15:29

Dry cereal like Cheerios? Brioche or croissants are also a popular choice here.

I would probably cut the milk to be honest as it's likely he's not eating because he knows he will just be given milk.

Shreddies?
Or anything that goes down well as lunch or dinner, perhaps make extra and reheat?

WeightoftheWorld · 03/05/2024 15:49

Yes to cereals, there are so many different types. My kids mostly eat Cheerios (well, usually supermarket own brand knock offs), shreddies/malted wheats, cornflakes. They do also love the high sugar stuff like frosties and Coco pops but we keep them as rare treats.

Otherwise:
Crumpets?
English muffins?
Crackers with cheese or peanut butter?
Scones?
Cereal bars?
Soreen?

climbershell · 03/05/2024 16:02

My 2.5yr old has had cereal for virtually every breakfast since starting her at 6 months. Cheaper versions of shredded wheat, Shreddies, Cheerios, Bran flakes or Wheatabix. Sometimes she doesn't want it and then has toast, either just with butter, peanut butter or cheese spread.

Occasionally rice cakes sandwiched together with peanut butter, before breakfast at nursery on nursery days.

Baby has cereal and/or toast, fruit and Sometimes lumps of cheese

Crumpets or quesadilla Occasionally

Is he more likely to eat it if you give him a croissant/cereal bar/oat biscuit while he's in the pushchair or car seat on the way?

yikesanotherbooboo · 03/05/2024 16:59

What are you having? One of mine liked to ring the changes. It's a shame about eggs but I would do beans on toast, sardines on toast, tuna sandwich, cold leftover pasta, cheese on toast, porridge, weetabix, marmite on toast, mushrooms on toast or avocado on toast, pancakes or scotch pancakes for them and just vary it.

GreenMeeple · 03/05/2024 20:35

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. I'm definitely going to try some cereal, maybe he will have that with his milk.

I did try and reduce the amount of milk I was giving him but once he stoped eating breakfast I kind of went back to it to just to make sure he got some calories in before a busy day. Maybe it's become a bad habit.

I will also try some of his favorite lunch foods like beans on toast.

He doesn't seem interested in bread like items unless they are very bland and then still not a lot.

I usually have muesli with yogurt or toast with honey. He used to want to eat it too but not anymore.

My son is very pleased with himself when he gets a little pile of chocolate sprinkles/chips to put on top of his porridge. I add all sorts of things to his porridge (nut butters, flax seeds, chia seeds, blueberries, mashed banana, raspberries- not all at once!) and he scoffs it all because he's happy he's got a few choc chips on top.

He also loves breakfast meats. So sausages, bacon etc with beans. Obviously not every day, but maybe once a week for variety.

Cheerios, mini shredded wheat and cornflakes are a big hit here. Also croissants, toast with peanut butter, fruit salads and yoghurts.

Have you tried making smoothies together? If he helps you to make the smoothie maybe he would be more interested in trying it.

24HoursFromTulseHill · 03/05/2024 20:50

Bircher muesli or overnight oats? Prepare the night before and leave in the fridge.

sciencemama · 03/05/2024 21:14

Dry cereal
Yogurt
Fruit
Waffles
Croissant
Sandwich

Sometimes my dc have been known to have cucumber and tomatoes for breakfast with a milk or tea

As long as they're eating something it doesn't matter

sandybeaches74 · 03/05/2024 23:32

My little girl has always had a bit of a picky breakfast. She's 6 now but has always had some kind of meat, like salami, ham or chicken, with olives, cheese, berries, cucumber, maybe a yoghurt or toast fingers... bit strange but it's healthy for her and she loves it

Helplessandheartbroke · 03/05/2024 23:37

Toast? Fruit bread toasted or tea cakes? These are my got to

NuffSaidSam · 03/05/2024 23:38

Some kids (and some adults) are just not breakfast eaters.

Remember that it doesn't have to be 'breakfast food', it can be anything he'll eat, there's no law against fishfingers or spaghetti Bolognese for breakfast. I'm fact,it's if breakfast food isn't nutritionally wonderful (e.g. most cereals).

What does he say when you ask him what he'd like?

If he'll eat when you pick him up, why not swap the banana for something more filling? Although, if he's sleeping well after just a banana then that's fine. He can just eat later if that suits him.

Pippippip2024 · 03/05/2024 23:39

My two love cous cous with cheese and veg for breakfast 😂 they ask for it all the time
