Improving listening skills for 5 year old

Both school and at home my 5yo ds just does not listen! If I ask him to do something, I have to ask him several times and it often results in him getting angry/whinging before doing what I’ve asked (or a version of!) in a temper.
school are now saying we need to work together to improve listening skills as he often gets up off the carpet etc (he’s in reception) but I’m wondering how to do this and if there’s anything at home we can do to help improve focus and listening. One to one he seems to be fine, it’s almost like he’s easily distracted by anyone and anything!
He is a very clever boy, always talking and doing something- it seems like his brain is always going.
any advice please!

Have you had his hearing checked?

Other than that, I would say try to give him a warning / advanced notice e.g. it's nearly time for dinner, I want you to turn off the TV in 5 minutes and then right it's time to turn off the TV please. Praise him when he does listen. Do things together that need concentration to work on his attention span e.g. jigsaws, reading, Lego.

Also does he get plenty of time to be active? Walking/scooting to school so he gets to burn off a bit of energy first?

I agree with a hearing test.

Thanks for responses! He had his hearing checked at his recent school NHS checks and all came back fine.

You could you a cue for him to focus, a friend I know uses '1,2,3, eyes on me" , gives one instruction at a time.

Watching with interest, my 5 year old is often like this! You are not alone!
