Son licked keys - WD40 was used in the lock a week ago - anxiety or A and E?

Last week I popped a bit of WD40 in my bike lock to loosen it up. Not loads just a bit. Throughout the week i've used the bike key in that lock once a day. Today my toddler (19 mo) managed to hook my keys off the side and when I turned round had the metal bit of the bike key in his mouth and was jangling the keys about. It would of only been in his mouth for a few seconds, there was no evidence of any oil on the key, if there was some it probably would of been trace amounts that had rubbed off slightly from when it went in and out of the lock. So in theory there may of been a small amount of wd40 on it but hardly anything. I am rolling my eyes at myself here but I have OCD so sometimes it is hard to know what is my anxiety talking and what any parent would worry about. This was about 3 hours ago. He has been FINE since. What do you think? Would you as a parent without OCD be worrying? Have called GP but the receptionist keeps just telling me to submit a query online to be looked at at some point over the next few days. Can I get a few other thoughts to give me some perspective here? Thanks lovely folk of Mumsnet

What do you think they’ll actually do at A&E? I’m not asking that to be facetious, but I think it helps rationalise it.

It wouldn't have crossed my mind to be concerned about this.

DuckBushCityLimit · 30/04/2024 11:47

It's fine, he's fine, don't worry!

The hazardous stuff in WD-40 is volatile, so it's very unlikely to be sitting on the key in any measurable amount, especially if the key isn't even oily.

No honestly, I wouldn't give this a seconds thought. Certainly doesn't warrant A&E. DS will be fine

My 5 year old ended up with some WD 40 in his mouth over the weekend. He was absolutely fine although he did not like the taste in his mouth. In fact, if your toddler is not complaining about a horrible taste in their mouth then they probably don't have a lot in their mouth!

idontlikealdi · 30/04/2024 11:51

No I wouldn't be worrying OP. He will be fine. He's probably licked worse.

XmasDilemma1986 · 30/04/2024 11:56

Absolutely fine OP, don't give it another thought

My son found fuel once and got it to his lips before I knocked it out of his hand and took him to an and e. The one thing they did say is if they ingest fuel you do not make them puke it up as it can burn their insides. We sat in the hospital for 12 hours just to be watched and then were sent home

WD40 is very similar to petrol. Your son probably inhales more petrol fumes when you fill up the car than he could ever get off your door key.

cheeseandketchupsandwich · 30/04/2024 12:01

Give him a drink.

Keep an eye on him.

And relax.

He's fine.

DD2 survived eating cat litter without as much as diarrhoea. I don't recommend it as a diet but toddlers are quite robust. Different if they'd been spraying the can into their mouth....

thaegumathteth · 30/04/2024 12:05

I am a worrier and wouldn't worry about this OP
