Looking for suggestions for longer books to read to a pre-school 4 year old please. Chapter books or similar but still with pictures - perhaps something we can read a chapter or two of each night. She can't read but has quite good comprehension. Thank you!

Certainly! Here are some longer books with pictures that could be perfect for reading a chapter or two each night to a preschooler:

  1. "Winnie-the-Pooh" by A.A. Milne - Classic stories with charming illustrations.
  2. "The Magic Tree House" series by Mary Pope Osborne - Adventure-filled stories with a good balance of text and illustrations.
  3. "Charlotte's Web" by E.B. White - A heartwarming tale with memorable characters and illustrations.
  4. "The Boxcar Children" series by Gertrude Chandler Warner - Engaging mysteries with simple language and illustrations.
  5. "Paddington Bear" series by Michael Bond - Delightful adventures of a lovable bear with colorful illustrations.
  6. "Frog and Toad" series by Arnold Lobel - Sweet and funny stories about friendship with simple illustrations.
  7. "The Little House" series by Laura Ingalls Wilder - Classic tales of pioneer life with charming illustrations.

These books offer engaging stories with pictures that can enhance comprehension and keep your child interested each night.

At four, my DD1 enjoyed:
A Pig called Lollipop
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
The Giraffe, the Pelly, and Me
Various Isadora Moon books and other books by that author

We've got Teddy & Co. and My Father's Dragon in our reading pile, but haven't got to them yet.

We have been reading my 3.5yo Winnie the Pooh, I'm really enjoying them too tbh. We have also read the first Paddington book and Charlie & the Chocolate Factory.

We also have a book of Fairy Tales and we'll read one each night

There's some great suggestions in the other comments

All of the illustrated Road Dahl books are favourites of DS(5). He particularly loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda.

We've done Winnie the Pooh and the Faraway Tree series by Enid Blyton (although I did do some editing of those as I read them). We're now on some of the Rainbow Magic series - I find them dull but my 5 yr old thinks a couple of chapters are great at bedtime.

We've been recommended the Teddy Robinson series, but I've not yet got hold of any of those.

Daisy Meadow fairy books are loved by my DD.
