School policy Glued wound

I know I will need to check with school directly tomorrow, but does anyone know if it's common for schools to have a policy to keep kids off following a laceration that has been glued and steristripped? It's on his chin, he is 6

I wouldn't have thought they would want them to stay off for that.

Maybe they will want them to be more closely supervised or stay in at playtime with a friend to avoid it getting bumped in any energetic playground games but no need to miss school completely.

My son had a long glued and steri stripped gash on his head and the only thing he wasn't allowed to do was water play (it was summer) as wasn't allowed to get it wet.

Eh? Its an accident, get on with life

My son just stayed in at lunch/play time and didn't do pe.

I can't see why they'd need him at home for that. He'll maybe need to stay in at break time/skip PE.

I've had kids go to school with stitched heads, broken arms etc. once they're feeling OK, they're good to go back.

My DS had one on his scalp and he couldn't go swimming (or wash hair etc) but otherwise was fine to go to school.

@Littletreefrog thanks for the reply, I do plan on taking him tomorrow but I wasn't sure if they would say he had to stay off, just so they didn't have the responsibility of keeping it dry/safe, he has SEN and has fallen over several times since he got back from A&E, 111 sent us as yellow fatty tissue was protruding and bleeding from his teeth

He isn't phased at all by it as usual!

Dd was glued and back the next day when she split her chin. I think I gave her calpol but she was fine and keen to show her friends. Her twin was distraught by it all - that was a weird day comforting the non bleeding child more than the injured one.

@TeenLifeMum his little brother was asking if he was dead when my partner carried him back from the park 😆

The replies are really helpful thanks, he does have swimming midweek which we will cancel and he won't do his usual sports clubs this week, I just wasn't sure if there was a common 'rule'

only a couple of restrictions I could think of

  • injury was so severe that dc is unable to attend school (thinking of concussion)
  • steri strips must not get wet, so pe and play outside only on dry days
  • the wound is at danger of re-opening through movement

He wasn't unconscious was he?

Lauren83 · 28/04/2024 17:10

@bluecomputerscreen Thankyou, they weren't concerned about concussion and he doesn't appear to be in any pain, although has taken the dressing off already

Lauren83 · 28/04/2024 17:11

@DoreenonTill8 no he wasn't, he just scooped him up to get him home quickly so we could look at it, he was stood on a climbing frame and slipped as it was wet and banged his chin and teeth on the way down

My daughter cut her foot about 2 months ago and she was glued and stitched.
She was off school till she could walk and then kept in with a friend at play and lunch time till the stitches came out x

Lauren83 · 29/04/2024 12:13

For anyone who may search and find this... school were fine, no PE this week and they said they would ring if it needed redressing at any point

Thanks for the input yesterday Smile
