I love cloth nappies BUT..............

Well I'm absolutely hooked on cloth nappies (my 3rd child, but first time on reusables), I love terries because they come up lovely and white, can be folded to fit, last for hours and are cheap BUT they leak bf baby poo something chronic!! I love shaped nappies with wraps as they are less of a faff and contain poo very well, last for hours (with a booster) BUT are realy quite bulky (and expensive). I love my pocket nappies as they are easy to use (dad proof!), look great BUT not all of them contain well and some leak up the back and they are VERY bulky with the booster in.

What does everyone else love/hate about their reusables??

And what is it about them that is sooo addictive???!!!

I hate not having enough money to buy more

I also hate the routine of having to reattach the onesize pop-in boosters that always detach in the washing machine

I love the big fluffy bum look in the tots nappies and the sight of nappies on the line drying in the breeze on a sunny day (OK that only happens 3 days a year in reality)

onepieceoflollipop · 01/04/2008 22:20

Until yesterday the smell from the nappy bin was getting to me a bit. So I got some lavender oil and put a few drops on a damp flannel and draped it over the contents - right at the top of the bin. I was excited that it worked fairly well. Guess that makes me sound really boring!

Love the tots bots fluffy bum look - like Washer said - but I hate it when they go crunchy. I refuse to tumble dry them unless desperate as it kinds of defeats the environmental benefit imo.

Just pegged out 11 nappies all in a row today they only needed finishing near the radiator. It's magical how the sun got most of the stains out.

Love using washable baby wipes. Washing the baby's little botty with a warm wipe rather than a cold "normal" baby wipe.

Lol!!

Do you know, I've been detaching the pop-in boosters before washing .... duh ...WHY??? How sad am I

And yes I agree about the sight of nappies drying on the line ..... oh and the SMELL of fresh air on them when they come in ...aaaaahhh

I loved them.
I have tons of them. All different kinds - terries, shaped, pockets, all in ones....
I even made my own superior version of a shaped nappy.
Oh those hot days of summer with them all hanging out dancing on my washing line..

But I've been washing nappies now for over 3 years including one year when both their bums were in them AND I'M SICK OF IT!!!!

Counting the days till ds2 is potty trained. He is 22m and did a wee in the potty before his bath tonight, yippee not long to go hopefully.

tellyaddict · 01/04/2008 22:25

Sorry - the Lol!! was for Washersaurus not having enough money to buy more nappies!

To onepieceoflollipop - I've been putting Tea Tree Oil drops in my buckets and that works quite well too - will lavender for a change.

Haven't yet ventured into reusable wipes, only just moved onto reusable fleece liners this week. They do help to stop the poo squitting right up my baby's back which is great - but haven't washed them yet to see if stains come out. I HATE stains soooo much!

Tellyaddict pushes in at the front of the queue for Flibbertyjibbets nappy sale... ouch, out the way!!

Oh, and the superior shaped nappy made by Flibbertyjibbets is MINE!

Actually, I am really curious - what did you do to make them better???

nappymadmummy · 01/04/2008 22:34

I love everything about mine.

The only thing I don't like is when dh forgets the changing bag and we have to go back home cos I can't just pop in a shop and buy more

onepieceoflollipop · 01/04/2008 22:34

TMI alert:

tellyaddict, once the baby is more established on solids the poo is (sometimes) a little more solid and you can sling the paper liner and poo straight into the loo, with barely a mark on the nappy/booster. Then you get 3 runny poos in a row and don't feel so chirpy about washing nappies!

loler · 01/04/2008 22:40

telly- have you tried different wraps (I find that the nappy type doesn't make much difference to the leaking it's the wrap that makes more of a difference) - that said I love motherease airflow wraps.

Washer - hello from aug 07!

I hate dh putting nappies in bucket without checking if they are empty so I find pieces of sweetcorn in the washing machine!

I love getting new fluffy nappies.

Washersaurus · 01/04/2008 22:52

Hi loler, how are you getting on? I lost track of the august 07 thread ages ago - just couldn't keep up with everyone!

Washable wipes are fabulous I agree.

Another downside though is the comical size of my change bag for 2 - 'tis enormous!

loler · 01/04/2008 23:01

Also lost track of the aug thread - used to catch up while stuck to the sofa feeding but ds now very happy on solids and thinks milk is a thing of the past! (apart from at night )

I love that the built up bottom keeps ds stationary. Can roll over when bare but stays in the same place with a nappy on (or is it the velcro on his back?!)

Jane99Thomas · 02/04/2008 15:17

I am a nappy guru - according to my friends! I bore them to tears! Some has expressed an interest & going cloth too.

I load the machine up the night before with nappies & leave a note for partner to put machhine on when he goes to work at 5am (making full use of economy 7 cheap electric).

I store nappy bin just outside the back door so no problems with smelly bin.

I have shaped & prefolds. Have to say prefolds are my favourite, despite them not being very popular. I only started using cloth when DS was 6 months old so not sure how effective prefolds are on newborns & runny breastpoo.

So wish I had started cloth earlier on. For baby no 2 I will use cloth from the start. I can't bear the thought of all those horrid chemicals being against their delicate skin.

tellyaddict · 02/04/2008 16:28

Hi loler - yes I've tried different wraps with the terries such as plastic pants to begin with, followed by one life wrap, motherease, nappy nation and tots bots. Sometimes they do contain the poo but then the wraps get soiled, whereas if I use a shaped nappy and wrap the poo hasn't (so far) leaked out of the nappy part onto the wrap.

jane99thomas
i love my pre-folds too, think they are fab
dislike size of nappy bag when you go out for th day
that said we're are potty training ( dont want to tempt fate by saying trained! ) so now don't have bag issue.
my sis loves them to, she put in her order to have all mine before she even fell pregnant!!
