Toddler Prescription Glasses

Hi All,

Can anyone recommend a glasses supplier that does decent toddler glasses? Lenses are prescription, +5 & +6. DS is 23 months. We went to Specsavers last week and rather than saying they didn’t have any frames to fit him we’re now stuck with a rubbish pair of glasses!

Also any advice on how to encourage our toddler to keep the glasses on? We’re going to try and persevere with the pair we have until we can find something more suitable.

Hi,

My little boy got his first glasses at 28 months old, first pair were lovely and from Specsavers but he broke them and annoyingly not only had they discontinued those particular glasses but they had absolutely nothing in his size and told me to try other opticians. Had to just go to an independent opticians for a new pair and luckily they had a few in his size to try on. Do you know what size glasses he needs? Might be worth ringing round some local opticians and asking what they have stocked in his size?

Regarding keeping the glasses on, my little boy was taking them off constantly at first because it obviously feels strange and probably a bit irritating for them but after a few days he quickly learned he could see better and kept them on more. You just have to keep telling them that they must be worn and keep encouraging them to wear them. He's just turned 3 now and he'll get out of bed in the morning and just grab them off the windowsill and put them on and if he can't find them the first thing he'll say is he needs his glasses. You'd be surprised how quickly they adapt to them 🙂

Tomato glasses are really good. DS's ophthalmologist recommended them. We had to travel a bit to find a supplier but they're very adjustable and robust.

I was going to say tomato too, always favourites!

I would also recommend Tomato glasses. Our local independent Opticians stocks them and they are by far the best glasses we have had. They come with a little kit that allows you to replace and adjust the arms and nose pads which has been very useful.

we used to go to our independent optician. I remember DS having cute Action Man glasses! (he is now 22 though, so this was some time ago!)

DN wore Tomato glasses when he was little. They’re really good and you can get bands to keep them secure. But if he’s that long sighted it might be worth getting a second opinion - recommendations are now that with severe there‘s no benefit of wearing glasses at this age. DN was +7 in both eyes and was only given glasses to wear when he started school. He’s 8 now and the prescription is +4 /+2.
