the 10pm pooey nappy.... holding it during the day?

My ds 2.4 has been dry now for a couple of weeks, doing really well, either taking self or asking. However, after the first few days of pooing happily on potty, he has started not wanting to; i find him in the pantry or the front room, straining, and realise he is trying to poo. After which he will happily sit on the pot and do a poo (but if you'll pardon the tmi, he will do one little bit, and then leap up - I know he hasn't emptied his bowels iyswim). So, we now have a pooey nappy in his sleep about 10pm. What can i do, if anything, or should I just keep cleaning him up in his sleep and waiting for him to decide he is happy to poo on the pot?

Was also wondering, his poo's seem very stiff/solid, thought at first maybe I had subconsiously not been giving his as much to drink, and he was a bit constipated, but he seems to be restricting his own fluid intake. He is really happy to wee on the potty/toilet, though? Any suggestions, help, would be really appreciated.

Cubby, don't know whether this will help - but, before ds potty trained he sat on the potty morning and evening and we read a book or two to him. This meant that he was in no rush to jump off and we nearly always had a 'performance' morning and night. He potty trained himself over a weekend at 2.2, although we have a very occasional accident at night. Last night he got up after being put to bed to have a poo - and he is very aware whether he is finished or not. Perhaps you could encourage longer sitting by doing something 'nice' at the same time? I'm sure there'll be an expert along soon anyway! Best of luck

Thanks for replying mt. We've never been able to get him to stop on the pot long.....occasionally he would sit for a bit if it was in the living room and his hairy bikers dvd was on (his fave prog - combines his 2 fave things motorbikes and food!! lol) so maybe I should try this morning and night. Thanks again.

This was why we made the potty routine something that he associated with enjoying ie having stories. Now its sometimes a struggle to get him off the loo because he's too busy chatting away to be concentrating on what he really should be doing!

yes yes yes we had a massive poo on the potty tonight. took his trousers off after tea and put potty out and hairy bikers on. let him play and keep having a sit on the pot, lots of false alarms but eventually he did a poo. wow, can't beleive how chuffed i am. i had a life once!!!!!

Hopefully, if you continue similar distraction techniques, he will continue to 'perform' and start to associate sitting on the potty with 'performing'
