Toddler refusing sleeping bag - ready for a duvet?

My daughter has always used a sleeping bag and is a front sleeper. She is almost 14 months and over the last few days has been refusing to get in her sleeping bag. When I try to lie her down in it, she bolts upright or tries to wriggle out of it.

I’ve tried giving her a very lightweight blanket and tucking it under the cot mattress, but she just climbs out from underneath it. I didn’t know whether, with her refusing the sleeping bag, it might be time to introduce a lightweight toddler duvet, but because she is so wriggly and active (she usually stands and stomps around in her cot for a good half an hour before she falls asleep), I feel she will just throw it off.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Is it too soon for a duvet?

Can you use a footed sleep suit if not ready for a duvet? That's what I use with my toddler.

Duvets (and a pillow if you want to introduce that too) are fine from 12 months. It should be 4 tog at that age and make sure you get a toddler/cot sized one if she’s still in the cot as opposed to a bed. Ikea do a really good value cot duvet and toddler pillow, and have lots of nice designs to choose from.

We switched to a duvet at 1

Oh and both of mine trashed about in sleeping bags but stayed put with a duvet and pillow! It’s like it place marked where to sleep or something. Toddlers are weird.

Toddler quilts are ok from 12 months. ☺️

I use a footed sleeping bag with my 2yo. A duvet would never stay in place.

Slumbersac sell sleeping bags with feet

redfox14 · 18/04/2024 13:46

@Runningupdathill @Lammveg @jerinop I think I would struggle to get her in a footed sleep bag/suit! She won’t stay still to be laid down in her sleeping bag now so I worry we’d have the same problem.

thank you for your advice! I’m just a bit worried about introducing a pillow as she sleeps on her front. But maybe I could put it under the cot sheet?

I’ve actually just read that toddlers shouldn’t have a pillow until they’re 2, so I will just introduce the duvet for now!

Although I can’t imagine she will keep it on 😂

All of my 4 kids switched to a toddler bed and duvet at around 14-18 months. Totally fine.

Runningupdathill · 18/04/2024 14:04

You don't need to lie down to put on the footed sleeping back though - it's just like putting on pyjamas.

Runningupdathill · 18/04/2024 14:05

Also turn it inside out when you put it on if you think she'll try to unzip it.

When my son was around 1 we swapped him to a duvet. He was in a single bed so got him a single duvet, turned it horozontal and tucked the edges in so it stayed on him. It worked well for him until he was about 2 and then he just slept with the duvet on normally

UnravellingTheWorld · 18/04/2024 14:07

When my son did this (idk what age) I put the sleeping bag on him standing up. Arms in, join the zip, feet in and zip down! Off to bed with you.
