Hi, I bought some lovely kids books (castellano) in a shop in Alcudia, just off the main square. Also in the huge Carrefour hypermarket off the Palma ring road, Col d'en Rebassa. And even our local Caprabo has books in all sorts of languages.
Manacor has some nice little bookshops, just a case of wandering up and down as I don't know exact addresses, but if you start at the cathedral and head outwards, at least 3 of the roads have small independent bookshops on. All sell in both catalán and castellano.
But there don't seem to be many bargains, not like you'd find here.
Which side of the island are you?

FNAC WEBSITE

Are there any independent bookshops near where you live? If so, why don't you go in and strike up a conversation with the person there, and ask for recommendations? Even the Corte Ingles might be able to help, if you can find a shop assistant who isn't gossiping to a colleague!

Sorry don't have any specific geographical help, but Spanish people do read stories to their kids, so they must buy them somewhere! Why doesn't your DP go and have a look. Maybe his family can point you in the right direction. Or he may even remember a book he loved from his childhood.

HOla mamyguay,

Sorry, I meant Pollensa not Alcudia - always get those 2 mixed up

mamiguay · 02/04/2008 09:13

Don't you have an annual book fair - I have found beautiful books browsing the stalls. All the books you have mentioned exist in Spanish. Brainstorm - what about joining el circulo de lectores. It is massive - you get a free gift for joining and it has a big children's section. It is no cheaper than a book shop and you have to buy from every edition but that way you and your husband could choose together.

amazon.com?

Shitemum · 06/04/2008 17:14

If you have fax i can send you a list of recommended reading from DD1's very nice Spanish nursery. I know what you mean about how they seem more cutre - there just isnt a tradition of childrens' literature here that comes anywhere close to ours. How old are your DC?
Check out the cultural section of El País newspaper, they often review children's books especially around the time of the big book fairs in Madrid etc.
I've seen a lot of UK childens' authors translated into Spanish too.
Have you tried your local library? You might be pleasantly surprised, or not.....
The editorial 'Kokinos' is consistent in quality. Look out for their titles.
HTH.

Actually I think i may have binned the list in a clear out but i can easily get it again. Let me know.

Shitemum · 06/04/2008 17:17

On an anecdotal note i looked on the Spanish ebay for kids books, there were about 3, compared with the thousands on the UK site . It is the European country with the lowest number of books read per year, per head of the population...

Is there a Carrefour in Mallorca? I always used to find good selection of picture books there when we lived in Spain. (Including Elmer)

Feeling sad now - just tried to post in Spanish and it came out all wrong - have been doing intensive Welsh (guess where we live now) and it kept coming out in Welsh Or possibly Spelsh?)

mamiguay · 07/04/2008 13:27

1066 thanks for the tip re. circulo de lectores, I'd never heard of it. Tried to sign up yesterday but couldn't find where to click on the page I'll figure it out..

amazon.com isn't ideal either as you can choose spanish book/ kid's books in spanish but can't narrow down the age groups so you have to just go page by page and it's quite a lot to wade through. Plus then paying shipping from USA to Spain is off putting.

I will try looking in the supermarkets more, it's not really ocurred to me. My son is only 1 so a reading list might be a bit beyond him (thanks anyway though shitemum ) I just love browsing book shops and find it a bit depressing that it's not quite the same experience here.

Thanks for the suggestions, will look into them more

Shitemum · 07/04/2008 21:11

I've found the list!
It's for up to 6 yo and includes stuff like Elmer. There may be a list for babies and younger children, I'll ask.
It's got quite a lot of books which have been translated from English or French judging by the author's names.
Don't worry, your DS will not be expected to work his way through the list or be set exams based on it!

It's good for seeing what is avaliable in Spanish, you could order specific titles that you like from a bookshop or online.

If you want it let me know which fax to send it to.
