How do you praise and encourage your baby to talk when their first word is "poo"?

I don't know why it's poo, and he doesn't know what it means, but he's always saying poo, and I'm so proud that he's finally "talking" so I'm a bit torn- I want to praise and encourage him because he's oh so bright and clever (pfb!) but I have visions of him yelling it in the supermarket and people thinking I'm awful for "teaching" him a bad word. He's 8 months.

Opinions? Does it matter? is it more important that I acknowledge his achievement and let him know he's communicating? I suppose it could be worse, word-wise!

If he's so bright and clever I'm sure he'll easily be able to learn to say 'Winnie the' as well

FWIW My 19 mo DD2's favourite words are 'bum' and tit'...

I teach my son to say things like 'Daddy fool'. Bad mother
I remember the sweet, blue-eyed little boy next door's first word was quite clearly 'bugger'. At least poo is a legitimate part of your every day language - especially when you have a baby - and doesn't show up your colourful language! You're right - it could be worse. Anyway, you could always pretend you and he are reading AA Milne together by responding 'That's right, darling, and there was Piglet, Eeyore, Owl...'
Very very clever boy, though

Great minds, Shitemum!

If it makes you feel any better, my dad's first word was 'bollocks'

I don't swear in front of ds, but somehow his favourite word, at 12 months, is "Shit!". It's very clear as well, and we are constantly saying "Yes darling, you want to SIT!".

Oh dear! lol I suppose it could definitely be worse then! I don't want people thinking I'm teaching him rude words.

Having said that, up to now dp and I haven't toned down our language but now he's on the verge of talking we'll have to start being very careful! How do you not say shitfuckfuckshit when you stub your toe etc though? lol
