Measles is a notifiable disease. Yes you should keep dd away unless she is fully immunised. The child's mother should have been told what to do in terms of isolation and infection control. Oh = sorry just realised dd is only nine months, so will not have been fully immunised. Definitley keep her away.

oh thanks little frog dd is ust recovering from a bug [she also picked up from her older cousin, and dd hasnt been well for about a week but is much better now.

now im just feeling paranoid in case dd has picked it up from her, dd hasnt had any spots or anything.

Is your dd breastfed? There is quite a high degree of immunity from mum if so. NHSDirect are not bad for this sort of stuff. But agree, whoever diagnosed the measles should have given directions.

Measles incubation period is fairly long I think. So she has had lots of lovely antibodies from you! But I would keep her away from her cousin til she has been told she is non-infectious.

robinrednomorenowemptybreasts · 31/03/2008 12:24

thanks, i alrady feel bad that dd caught this bug off her cousin.

just found out dds cousin has had her mmr.
so why has she got the measles if shes had the mmr then?

i will definatley kep dd away from her cousin but you dont think dd could of got it already do you? last time dd saaw her cousin was 14th of march., so nearly 2 and a half weeks ago.
surely if dd had of picked up meales from her cousin it would of showed up in dd by now?

I am not sure of the incubation time for measles but I do know that not all children are completely covered by the first mmr.

That is why they do the 2nd mmr at 2yo.

NorthernLurker · 31/03/2008 12:28

I wonder if your dd's cousin had contracted measles before she had the mmr. If she's 13 months she must only just have had the jab.

NHS direct says the incubation period is 9-11 days with the rash appearing at about 14 days post exposure - so you may be ok.

link for you

its been 17 days since dd saw her cousin, so hopefully we hav just missed passing it on to dd, which is lucky as we almost saw her at the weekend, as mum was looking after cousin

OP posts:
NorthernLurker · 31/03/2008 13:12

that is lucky - I am worried about B catching it tbh - she is starting nursery at 12 mths when I go back to work but can't have the mmr till she's 13 mths.

robinrednomorenowemptybreasts · 31/03/2008 13:39

lurker, ikwym, i wonder if they could give it to your lo early? 12 months would seem resonable to me ?

OP posts:
NorthernLurker · 31/03/2008 13:42

I asked the practice nurse actually - said could we swap the schedule round so she has mmr at 12 mths and the other jab at 13 mths - but she said they had to do it per the schedule. I'm still breastfeeding her and there hasn't been a local measles case - yet - so I hope we'll be ok - it is a worry isn't it?

robinrednomorenowemptybreasts · 31/03/2008 13:46

yes it is a worry, i totally understand where you are coming from, at least your lo is still bf, mine isnt so she doesnt have the protction from me, just spoke to my sister and she said in there village there has been a few cases of measles, we live in a different village.

dds cousin had the mmr on thu and got a vitral rash straight away and came out in measles over the weekend, and had to go the the emeregency drs at the weekend

My ds (10 mo) was in hospital last week with suspected measles (actually I don't think it was, but they were concerned it might be) - I asked then about immunity in bf babies and was told it falls away around 9 months, and the first dose of MMR makes around 80% of children immune. Unimmunised children who are in close contact (e.g. live in the same house) as someone with measles have a 90% chance of catching it.

It was scary and measles is nasty -I'd definitely stay well away until you're sure she's not infectious any more.

fleximum · 31/03/2008 13:49

Are you sure definitely measles. If just had MMR, could be reah related to that. My ds had classical measles rash 10 days after MMR - scared the crap out of our childminder as she was convinced he must have chicken pox.

robinrednomorenowemptybreasts · 31/03/2008 13:50

thankyou latchmegorl, sorry for your bad experience, must of been v v scary at that young age of 10months. i will definatly heed the advice and stay well away.how long do you think i should kep dd away from her cousin ?
why do you think she come out in measles at the weekend if she had the mmr on thursday? do you think she contracted it before?

OP posts:
robinrednomorenowemptybreasts · 31/03/2008 13:51

we the drs said it was a rash due to the mmr on thursday, then at the weekend they said she had measles
