Baby will furniture cruise and walk holding both are hands up either side of him but he just cant seem to walk independently. As soon as we let go of hands he will bend down on his knees and crawl, im starting to get worried. Anyone had a baby similar? What helped get baby to walk on their own? Any tips/advice appreciated

Hi, my DS took his first steps at 17 months but would quickly revert to crawling again. As he got to 19 months and was still favouring crawling, my DH and I would sit at opposite ends of the living room and encourage him to walk between us. We'd start only a few steps apart and then would gradually increase the distance. I know that sounds a bit simplistic but that's what got my DS walking confidently. Hope that's of some use.

Thank you that's reassuring, we have tried getting him to walk between us but he'll just fall to his knees and crawl, we'll keep working on it!

Try putting a ball in each of his hands. Apparently it acts like a tightrope walkers pole and helps balance.

Does he have a push along toy of any sort? Maybe one of those trolleys with bricks in? That might give him the confidence/support to keep going

Try not to worry - my little one was 18 mo the and then she just got up and walked. My friend's little one wasn't until even later ans is still a bit wobbly at just over 2. They're all so different! I eas a bit worried initially because everyone else seemed to be around a year, but it really makes no difference xx

Truth is he will get it when he is ready, if he is already cruising it's unlikely there is any problem but I understand the frustration so what worked for my DS at a similar age was:

Slowly work on getting him confident walking only holding one of your hands (slowly loosen your grip on one side, till you are just holding his fingers whilst remaining a tight grip on the other side) then once he is confident walking only holding one of your hands start to slowly loosen your grip on that side - til he is only holding one of your fingers and then the tip of one of your fingers etc.

Take him to places where he can't crawl (the park?) so he has to walk holding hands and will eventually grasp doing it by himself.

DS1 walked very late. Even after doing his first steps he didn't really walk voluntarily. Eventually he wanted to move a toy and worked out it was easier to walk and hold it in two hands.
