What to buy for my summer baby!

I'm due mid July but will have a c section so will likely be early July. I had my last child in April a few years ago and remember having so much for her, had lots of choice but she didn't end up wearing half of it.
In the interest of space saving and sustainability I'm trying to limit what I buy for my son this time round. My last daughter was a big baby and late so skipped the newborn sizes entirely, this baby as he'll be early may get a few weeks use but can't be sure so that's also making it harder! And who knows how hot it will actually be this year 😂

What did your summer newborns wear? I've got a couple of sleep suits, vest/body suits and t shirts at the mo, and a 1 tog ergobaby sleep sack but what else would you put on the list?

The same stuff as your April baby wore, I liked long sleeved tops and leggings as newborn babies get chilly so an extra layer in the summer is ok

NuffSaidSam · 15/04/2024 09:57

I'd get a load of vests and some sleep suits.

Sun hat.

Muslins.

That's it really.

If we have a particularly cold July and you need more sleep suits easy enough to get some delivered. I would buy the bare minimum in advance and then see what you actually need when the baby is here.

Thanks both, I've got one drawer I'm using for him so for now will just get a few options for each line you say.
I remember buying my daughter a denim jacket age 0-3 months 😂 the most ridiculous purchase!

You'll be bought clothes as gifts too.

Definitely must make sure you have vests and sleep suits, honestly other than that it’s just dressing them up for the sake of it, they don’t know or care what they’re wearing!
I don’t know how big your circle of family and friends is, ours is enormous and we had so many lovely outfits gifted to us, I mainly kept them in vests and babygros for months so it was such a waste, we donated so much.
I did dress them in the gifted things sometimes but really I didn’t care about frilly pretty stuff, just wanted them to be comfortable, easy to change and practical without looking silly!

Agree, that's all I ended up doing with my daughter, had all these lovely dresses that just weren't practical for a newborn. I always buy nice outfits for friends in bigger sizes so they'll be able to wear them when it's more practical! Quite a big circle and lots of baby boys in it too so thinking a few bits might make it our way or I'll get first dibs anyway!

I didnt think they could wear sun cream until 6 months?

August born - mix of short and long sleeved vests with sleepsuits and leggings. First 3 days were a heat wave but still in two layers as they had previously been in a cosy 37deg bath so even the heat wave was cooler. Then she had 1 layer during the day and two at night.

I had a 6lber and used asdas first size and Sainsbury's under 1 month both covered 6.5-10lb for us. She was in them until 10 weeks as a dinky baby, a more typical sized baby i think expect to get 3-6 weeks from them

yikesanotherbooboo · 15/04/2024 12:23

I had 2 June babies, one very skinny and one born in a heatwave. I stuck to vests and sleepsuits inherited from older winter baby. I couldn't justify the first size although the thin baby would have probably got a good few weeks out of them. No need for cardigans or hats but otherwise no real difference in clothes apart from removing a layer in the heat and needing a parasol for the pram from day one.

wishIwasonholiday10 · 15/04/2024 12:24

Mine was born early July at the start of a heatwave and often just wore short sleeve vests at home (and sleepsuits for going out). We had to buy more in newborn size as didn’t have enough. Short sleeve rompers are super cute but not really needed as they could just wear vests if hot. Never used the cute cardigan in newborn size.

We used Love to Dream swaddles in 0.2 tog and 1 tog. Out flat was averaging 28 degrees overnight for the first few weeks.

Echobelly · 15/04/2024 12:30

I was a big fan of romper suits for summer, although God knows if we're even getting a summer in the UK this year! They're easy to put on and not tight so lovely for holidays and hot weather

This kind of thing:

What to buy for my summer baby!
Singleandproud · 15/04/2024 12:34

Don't buy loads, just enough basics for the first week, in a couple of sizes from Matalan or a Supermarket. Once baby arrives then youll get gifts and with Amazon and Next delivery you can order in the correct size and have it arrive the next day.
If you still have bits from your previous children then use those too, he won't care if it's pink.

WeightoftheWorld · 15/04/2024 12:50

My summer baby basically just wore long sleeved vests for the first 6 weeks of their life as they were born in a heatwave and we lived in a third floor flat with no AC, it was boiling! If we went out (not much in those early weeks) then I'd pop a sleep suit on them and a little woollen cardigan too on the odd time it was colder. Basically the same as my autumn baby but I just needed a lot less sleep suits and cardigans in the smallest sizes as it was so warm.

takealettermsjones · 15/04/2024 14:59

Three summer babies here! I think what you've got is fine for now (you can get more when you know what size to buy) but I would add a cellular blanket or two, to layer on top of the thin sleep sack if needed, so you don't have to change baby if the night turns a bit cooler. Keep one in the car/pram etc too just in case. I used either sleep suits or long sleeve vests and thin leggings, so that I could cover all their skin in just one layer, for sun protection (obviously keep in shade as much as possible anyway). Short sleeve vests indoors if the weather is very hot. I'd still get a cotton hat or two. I'd also make sure you have sun shades on the car windows and parasol on the pram as PP said.
