Baby screaming in car

OrionNebula · 13/04/2024 17:58

Hi, baby (6 months) has until recently been fine in the car but has recently started screaming her head off even on short journeys. I always make sure she is fed before we get in the car, clean nappy etc. She has a soother but keeps spitting it out. It's very stressful!

Any tips or ideas would be appreciated!

You may have already tried this but I have started giving my baby a noisy toy on car journeys. Just a small one that also has a bit they can chew and a button you press for the music that lights up. It’s worked for 9 out of 10 journeys.

Mine has been the same. I've put it down to the warmer weather and dressing him in less clothes seems to have helped

OrionNebula · 13/04/2024 18:05

@SnowSnow will try a noisy toy, thanks

@Okdaisy she was in a fairly light dress with just a vest underneath so don't think she was too hot - but will try even lighter clothing next time. Just one layer maybe.

Play nursery rhymes

OrionNebula · 13/04/2024 18:16

@Sunshineclouds11 I put little baby bum on my phone but she obviously can't hold the phone herself yet so she keeps dropping it/closing it down... not sure if there any phone holders that will keep it where she can see it... she's in a rear facing maxi cosi seat.

Can you not play through the car?

OrionNebula · 13/04/2024 19:10

Yes can try that too.

I think Axkid make a crash tested tablet holder - I don't know if a phone would fit in there. Have you tried playing the Happy Song but Imogen Heap? I've heard that's good!

OrionNebula · 13/04/2024 20:57

@Sagaris thanks will look into both of those!

I got a car phone holder off of Amazon which worked while he was rear facing, it attached to the metal bits in the headrest. We didn't use it often, I'd only use it when I wanted to keep him awake in the car to avoid danger naps! But it did the trick

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 13/04/2024 21:05

Check seat doesn't need adjusting.

Play white noise through speakers in back. Give her a toy

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 13/04/2024 21:06

@OrionNebula yes loads of phone holders that go on headrest. I've got them in my car

fsgsuduforbbfkrk · 13/04/2024 21:06

Try playing a song called the happy song by imogen heap. Drove me crazy but both babies loved it

Spangler · 13/04/2024 21:08

I played twinkle star, on the piano, on a loop. No other music would do and it seemed to soothe her instantly. It was far better than the screaming!

OrionNebula · 13/04/2024 21:27

Will definitely check out this Happy Song!

Play nursery rhymes

This worked like a charm for DS1 who hated car journeys. I was sick listening to them, but it was better than the endless wailing. I assumed DS2 would be the same, but he HATED the nursery rhymes and screamed the first time I put them on. Their personalities years later still reflect those preferences in so many ways🤣🤣

Jk987 · 13/04/2024 21:52

Try and time car journeys with nap times, that helped a lot for us.

OrionNebula · 13/04/2024 22:48

I thought that would work in our favour today, we were driving back from a friends house around 4 which is usually nap time. She slept for about 10 mins then kicked off big-time 😩

Make sure you get a crash tested phone/tablet holder OP. Besafe and Axkid are the two I'm aware of. My 2 yo kicks off in the car unless she's sleeping, so it's been a godsend for us!
