Baby is 5 months and is ready for some milk rice (the one you start weaning with at about 4-6 months) how much should I be giving a day and what do I gradually increase it to? How long are they on the rice for before blending food like purée broccoli etc x

@GardnerAva I’m sorry but that I don’t agree with you don’t have to wait untill 00:01 untill your baby turns 6 months old what difference is that truly going to make? Midwives and health Visotors advise to wean when ready if the baby looks and act ready at 5 and half months waiting 2 weeks is pointless might aswel start the weaning process slowly that is what is in the leaflet right infront of me about weaning from the nhs that the health visitor gave me ..weaning at 5 months starting off with one small spoon a day isn’t a bad thing. I don’t want new mums to read this and think they can’t do that and ignore their babies needs it is not texted book. Mum’s know their baby best. I was just after Initial guidance about baby ride etc - not to be told to give the baby food after midnight at 6 months old that’s not right - again every baby is different 5 and half months is perfectly safe to wean

Yet you only mention getting professional advice when people don't agree with you... I doubt a hv would suggest baby rice.
Back in the day 1990 's advice was 3 months. Dd has now been diagnosed with Crohns... Coincidence? Possibly. Possibly not.

Im talking about weaning soft not solids - puréed broccoli for example or baby rice smooth and no bits- not talking about solids

We started at about 5-6 months and started with baby rices and porridges, then started giving the puree pouches of just fruit or veg. Gradually some of the melty puffy to have a go at holding and putting hand to mouth. Once that was all a bit better established then started to give more textured/lumpy foods, introduced pasta and stuff he could hold in his palm easily.

I know it’s easier said then done but try not to get hung up on purées vs BLW, they all end up eating the same anyway eventually. Just let baby lead you, if you feel comfortable to let him try a bit of your food then let him try it - it’s not the end of the world if he doesn’t like it or just plays with it for the first few months.

Everything other than milk is solids btw.

Just feed normal unprocessed food. Most baby food is ultra processed which is so bad for them.

Just whole, healthy, organic where you can food. Porridge, steamed veg purées, not too much fruit when they’re tiny, blended meals.

Baby rice is about as nutritional as sawdust and is ultra processed.

Start doing some research into what is healthy for infants and go from there.

@Daffodilsarentfluffy no the health visitor did not mention to give my baby the rice I never said that at all. I said the heath visitor when I last saw her gave me the leaflet about weaning and it says in the leaflet it’s around 6 months weaning can be started if it’s before then the baby gives you indication they are ready the mother knows their baby best - that’s what I said. Weaning at 5 and months old is not a bad thing I was just after some advice about the baby rice and then the veg purée that is in the previous discussion with others on this chat. Weaning 2 weeks or 4 weeks before 6 months isn’t a bad thing if your baby is ready that’s all I stated and said the health visitor said you know the best when baby is ready it’s not a bad thing or wrong just before 6 months if ready…geez

@MammaTo exactly the baby leads you know your own baby how they act but others are saying you can’t give them NOTHING untill 1 minute after midnight after 6 months. I only came on about baby rice lol

You'd be amazed - I had a HV suggest that I give my 9 month old custard for pudding every evening to make him sleep better. And that was only 3 years ago!

I live in eu and baby rice is such a "thing" . Papa here I think. Never did it. I didn't do baby lead wattsit as it's such a mess , but was lead by baby if that makes sense.

She sat up and got given stuff . When interest grew I puréed etc .. then you gradually get into the groove. One hungry tantrum soon makes you realise they need more! Weetabix is a good start I think? Probably UPF now, but worked for us.

Gradually you will see what baby needs and go from there. The baby rice stuff is not a thing in uk so you won't get much positive energy about it .

I love how people on MN are so utterly sure they are correct. I live in Switzerland and here it’s fruit & veg purées from 16 weeks on medical advice.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 11/04/2024 21:30

I started straight away with puréed fruit and veg at 5 months (I live in the Netherlands where they recommend solid foods from 4 month so went for the halfway point between that and uk advice )

Garman · 10/04/2024 17:51

26 weeks is the recommended age for weaning into solids, start with normal porridge not the baby rice which is highly processed and not necessary.

In the uk, it is earlier elsewhere

Definitely don't wean until 00:01 am on the day your baby turns 6 months Op, it's extremely dangerous!!
But to answer your question, I did blended veggies and fruits to start with, also a little before 6 months.

If it’s extremely dangerous why are other countries telling you to do it earlier?

I'm in England and I started mine at 4 months old. Shocking behaviour apparently 😳

I think @GardnerAva was being sarcastic.
