Reassure me with your toddler stories please!

Currently in the toddler trenches with my 23 month old and looking for reassurances that he will calm down…

My daughter at the same age was placid and easy to manage, and I hate to admit it but I was one of those parents who wondered what all the toddler fuss was about. I now know which is great karma I suppose!

He's just absolutely relentless, full of energy, runs never walks, understands perfectly but 90% of the time chooses to ignore it. Kicks off if peel a banana the wrong way, has a meltdown if I give him the wrong colour cup/cutlery etc etc, has the attention span of a gnat. This is all normal, right?!

His speech isn’t great which is giving me cause for concern, and might be why he gets so frustrated, and is something I’m going to raise with my HV. Please someone tell me their toddlers were like this and came out the other end!

We start our days with a two hour dog walk to get to a "normal" level of toddler energy...

Wild.

My DS speech wasn't good at 2, 5 words tops.
As his speech progressed his frustrations slowed down.

Have a look into pecs, this helped us in understanding what he wanted and gave him a choice.
So you could do this for his coloured cups etc.

@Littlepicklepie ok this makes me feel better and something I might try although as soon as he has some freedom he is then off and hard to catch 😂

@Sunshineclouds11 my DS is very similar, probably about 5 words and some animal noises. Will definitely look at PECS. I’m torn between early intervention with a SALT and just waiting it out, as so many people have told me their DC’s speech exploded between 2 and 2.5.

How much screen time is he getting? And is the content fast paced e.g. Paw Patrol? Does he have much processed food?

It is normal for some toddlers to be like this but i know these things work my daughter up and she always has more tantrums and runs off more. Easter has been fun with all the chocolate 😭

Mine is nearly 2.5 and his older brother was beautifully behaved. Like you, I was smug Grin

He’s currently in a hiding/posting things stage. It’s a nightmare. I was locked in the house at school run time the other morning until my mum raced round to let me out as he’d posted the keys through the letterbox to the outside. His favourite word is no, closely followed by DON’T LIKE IT roared into my face from close proximity. He also climbs, runs, escapes and genuinely wouldn’t surprise me if he managed to set something on fire.

He does say “I lob you” and give gorgeous snuggles, but usually only when he can see steam coming out of my ears and knows he needs to do something redeeming Grin

My little one was also slow to talk. Great understanding but no words. For us his speech did take off at about 2.5, but it's taken a year from contacting the HV about it to getting his SALT sessions so I'm really pleased I did. If his speech hadn't taken off I'd be really stressed if I was now waiting on sessions so I'd get him in the system and then if you don't need the sessions that's fine. So now he's chatty and wild 😂

I would 100% get SALT involved. The wait times are long and you want his name within the system.
You don't want to get to say 2.5/3 with little speech and have to wait.

@RedRobyn2021 I would say the Easter holidays haven’t been great screen time wise as we’ve all been poorly and in survival mode. But he tends to watch Bluey or whatever Disney film his sister is watching. And again he isn’t a great eater so we have to pick our battles and make compromises with the occasional nuggets and chips 😶

@Flangeosaurus yeah I fully regret the smugness 😂Funny you say that about the posting, we have a dog flap and if we ever lose anything we just check the dog flap and lo and behold it will be sat, usually soaking wet, outside on the patio!

@Littlepicklepie he’s really similar, great understanding (although chooses to ignore me most the time) and I know he ‘knows’ more words but he’s just so stubborn to use them. I did speak to my HV and he’s been referred for a hearing test, but I’m going to ask for a SALT referral too just to get the ball rolling. I do feel stressed about it all too and wish I could relax a bit!
