Back molars causing A LOT of pain??

Son is 2 years 3 months old and cutting his back molars. I know it's this because he's telling me his teeth hurts and I can feel a tooth cutting through.
Well he's got from the happiest child to the grumpiest and not eating.
Nights are horrendous , last night being the worst where he was just screaming most of the night and dropping off for half hour and then awake again crying and thrashing around. Usually he sleeps through. I feel like I've got a newborn again.
Obviously keep giving him ibuprofen and calpol as it's due but doesn't seem to be helping an awful lot. The ibuprofen helps for a couple of hours.
I'm wondering if it's something else other than teeth for him to be so distressed?
He's not really got a temp though and is a bit chesty but not really any cold symptoms.
Anyone else's toddler been this bad with just teeth?
They are his back molars, his last teeth to come in.
Debating whether to take him GP but don't want to waste their time because it could just be his teeth. He's drinking plenty.

He's literally walking around screaming and won't eat or drink. Is this really normal for teething? Hes never been this bad before

So sorry you’re going through this! Just needed to jump in to say omg we’re at exactly the same! My little one is usually so happy but all night and day today screaming, won’t eat, dribbling, pulling at his mouth and won’t go to sleep even though he’s knackered. We think it’s teething too as he’s 2 next month. Praying it’s not too long!

I did end up taking him to the doctors in the end because he wouldn't drink anything at all! Luckily now he's had 2 ice lollies and some cows milk.
She said his throat is really sore and tonsils almost touching. So as well at the molar erupting - a double whammie for him. Hes not eaten all day and has been stuck to me like glue. Alternating calpol and neurofen as doses allow. Hopefully he sleeps a bit better tonight. We are all shattered!!

Have you tried some anbesol for the teething, liquid or gel? (Liquid is easier to apply, gel is harder to spill.) It works really quickly when they need it as well.

Yes I've tried this and he won't let me in his mouth. I did manage to get some on him but not sure if it offers any relief or not. Also tried it on my own gums to test it and it did seem to numb the area so really wish he'd let me apply it properly.

Ah, that's tricky – if he'd let you in, mine have both caught on quite quickly that it stops the pain. Is he chewing on anything? Possibly you could put some on a teether and let him put it where it hurts? Or with his toothbrush, if he's cooperative about that?

Or depending on how his understanding is, possibly he could do it himself. DD2 is a couple months younger and likes to have a go herself, but she does know what she's trying to do, she's felt me do it enough (she takes teething hard).
