Showing toddlers horror films

Is it me or has this recently become a horrible trend?

I saw a parents story yesterday of their child under 3 watching a famous slasher movie. Caption along the lines of "they love it" filming said child intently watching the tv showing a dead body and the scary masked murderer.

Open to hearing other views on this, I am an avid horror film hater so maybe I'm being too narrow minded but the thought of showing my pure beautiful child (same age as child in video) anything with violence, gore or death makes my stomach turn and just makes me so sad.

Didn't know it was a trend but that's pretty messed up.

Mrspatmoresspoon · 07/04/2024 20:17

Not sure it’s a trend. Sounds like one sick fuck who’s toddler will never sleep again

Jokl · 07/04/2024 20:18

A trend, no. Are some people this thick/selfish/shit at parenting? Absolutely. It’s appalling.

That's sick and really bad parenting. I would be reporting them to safeguarding. What else are they being subjected to?

misssunshine4040 · 07/04/2024 20:20

There are age ratings on films for a reason.
What a sick, disgusting individual letting a young child see such disturbing images.

To me, I would consider that abusive

NotARealWookiie · 07/04/2024 20:21

No that’s not legit behaviour.

Isitthathardtobekind · 07/04/2024 20:23

@misssunshine4040 me too! Would definitely pass to mash. Too often children arrive at school ruined because of adult choices while they are little. The impact can be huge.

Ellysa · 07/04/2024 20:25

Ah yes some of the parents at our old school did that. Those kids are all violent little thugs now.

Slow handclap for the fucking idiots who think desensitising children to violence is a good idea.

juneybug12 · 07/04/2024 20:25

Exactly my opinion it falling into a form of abuse. Obviously the child wasn't being forced, but an inquisitive toddler wouldn't probably have the understanding or restraint to not watch something that's brazenly put in front of them. Just made me so sad to see. In other ways they look like a very normal (perhaps a little alternative) family. I just can't believe people think it's acceptable or appropriate. I won't even show my child the Pixar films but I know I'm a little extreme, but I'm glad that parent is the minority and this won't become a "thing!"

Definitely not okay. And I say that as someone who has just taken their 6 year old to see ghostbusters.
Def worth a word with the school who has pass to safeguarding

passthehobnobsplease · 07/04/2024 20:27

If you have evidence of this happening, contact your local social services dept and report them. This is twisted child abuse in my eyes.

Bobskeleton · 07/04/2024 20:27

Wow I did not know this was something that is being trotted out as a trend. It's honestly beyond belief.

Makes me feel a little less guilty about my toddler watching A nightmare before Christmas 😬

AliasGrape · 07/04/2024 20:28

I don’t think it’s a trend no.

One school I worked at had Reception children talking about horror films and coming in on world book day dressed at the clown from It, but that was one or two examples of ignorant, shitty parenting rather than a ‘trend’ as such. Yes the parents were spoken to, and the safeguarding/ pastoral team within the school were on the case.

KoolKookaburra · 07/04/2024 20:28

That's abusive. It's going to warp their brains.

AliceMcK · 07/04/2024 20:34

I worked with a guy almost 20years ago who would go on about his 2 & 4yos sons loving Texas Chainsaw massacre.

Im fairly relaxed, like a good scary movie and my 10yo has developed that gene but I never let her watch stuff when she was little. She begged me to watch something she’d seen advertised, mainly for the actress involved. I said I let her with me present and turn it off if she got scared, she didn’t and her love for scary movies has grown, but I still have restrictions on what she’s allowed to watch and it’s always with me present. DH hates scary movies so it has to be me.

Newuser75 · 07/04/2024 20:45

When my eldest was in reception and year one there were a few kids who had watched Chucky and it! Couldn't believe it.

SwordToFlamethrower · 07/04/2024 21:07

Well. My sister made me watch Faces of Death and other gore horrors when I was a little girl and it caused me lifelong serious trauma.

Just diagnosed with autism, so imagine being shown that and my brain not understanding it is "fake". To be honest, I think some of the deaths were real.

I can still picture them and it makes me feel physically sick.

I had nightmares for years and was terrified all the time.

It is cruel and abusive to show any child horror films.

^ report!

MissMarchple · 07/04/2024 21:31

I was watching the Paw Patrol Mighty Pups movie with my 3 year old and thought it was a bit much in some parts.

I haven't seen a trend about violent slasher movies for 3 year olds. But given some people will do anything to create online content and some are just horrendous parents, I'm not surprised.
