Child Friendly Names for Female Genitalia

My son is confident with various names for his 'dickey' (the name he seems to use most often). But my daughter has no name for her 'front bottom' as we tried calling it. She calls it her 'girl's willy'. Most of the words I can think of are either technical or have become terms of abuse. Does anyone have any words which work for their daughters?

Tis a 'Noonie' in this household.

windygalestoday · 29/03/2008 17:00

a fairy?
a moo-moo
a tupppence
a lala
minky?

i dunno tbh ive worked in nurseries and peeps call em all sorts

FrannyandZooey · 29/03/2008 17:02

Vulva is fine IMO - technical, but not an unpleasant word

it's good for them to have a word that everyone will understand, rather than foofoo or whatever which could lead to misunderstandings

also I think it is good to be upfront and give a proper name rather than a euphemism - sends a strong message we are comfortable with these parts not ashamed of them

Agree with Franny. IMO, t'is rather silly to be using such words as fairy and flower and such like.

DD just calls it her 'bits' she knows it is a vagina or vulva though, she has been calling it ehr 'vagina' more often lately since we've discussed vaginal birth but I've just found it easy to say 'wipe your bits' or w/e to both her and DS.
DS knows his penis is a penis but calls it his winky most of the time, it depends what mood they are in.

TiggerOfDevon · 29/03/2008 17:17

Mini or Nimi we use here

spamm · 29/03/2008 17:19

We call it a kiki, which was the name my family used when I was growing up in Switzerland - I just feel comfortable with it and ds seems fine.

I needed a word recently when he asked me if I had a willy, and I couldn't think of anything. I am not comfortable with vagina for my nearly-3 year old.

VictorianSqualor · 29/03/2008 17:22

But what if they ever need to tell someone something regarding their bits and you're not there?
I think worrying about telling an almost three year old it's proper name is as silly as calling a foot a ting tong or a nose an wiggymijig. They have names, use them.

Umlellala · 29/03/2008 17:30

VictorianSqualor - same as you here. 'Your bits' informally but dd (23mths) knows its her vulva (and I will go into vagina when it comes up).

VictorianSqualor - I don't disagree with you at all, it makes sense. But then it's not like "willy" is unknown - so why is there not an equivalent for girls that is not too silly.

So far I have just not been comfortable with vulva. My own fault and am passing on my embarrassement to my ds. But because I do agree with you and Umlellala I will do my best to use the proper words.

spamm · 29/03/2008 18:55

Thinking about it - I also think it is because English is not my first language - so not as comfortable with certain words. I will try harder .

vovosch · 30/03/2008 20:24

Thanks for all the suggestions. I agree they need the proper names, and my son is comfortable with penis but generally chooses willy or dickey (a word he learnt outside the home). I'm happy to use vulva and give the word to my daughter to use, but it would be good if there were equivalent words to 'willy'. My son confidently talks when friends are around abut his 'dickey' - if it gets hit while playing for example. I'd like my daughter to have some words she and her friends were comfortable with too.

Interesting discussion - when I was smaller it was always referred to as 'tucky' as it's all 'tucked in' (at least in comparison to willies). Which didn't seem too technical/rude etc. Can recommend the Story of V (book) which doesn't provide any suggestions at all, but looks at reasons why women's 'bits' have their names and why some are rude etc. Especially interesting that there is no male equivalent which causes as much offence as the most offensive female term!

nannyjo · 30/03/2008 22:17

My DS called it front bottom with hair on once!!!

mananny · 01/04/2008 21:41

Hi, I look after BG twins, so lil fella's willy is known (very fondly by him!!) as "winky" and her name for her bits is "twinky". Not at all anatomically correct but extremely cute. They are 2.5yrs and pretty much decided on the names themselves.

pinkorblue · 02/04/2008 21:28

A twinky.

lennygrrr · 02/04/2008 21:36

Lulu!

Janni · 02/04/2008 21:36

'noonie' works really well for us too

mananny - that is very sweet!

beansontoast · 02/04/2008 21:39

we say 'nuh-ny' (if thats teh same as noonie?)

i really like it....

is that weird? (dont need taht answered really)

Janni · 02/04/2008 21:42

Yes, that's the one, beans. The kids have sort of distorted it to noonie and sing a song about a 'noonie noonie noonie noo'

TheFallenMadonna · 02/04/2008 21:46

My dd refers to wee and poo bottoms. Which is a little close to front bottom, but it seems pretty descriptive.

TBH, I prefer the nonsense names to using vagina to refer to the vulva.
