Nearly 2.5 yo not potty trained

DS is 27 months, and not potty trained

he randomly will say poo poo, before pooing in nappy. Sometimes grabs a nappy to indicate he needs changing but he doesn’t really tell us he needs the loo. We have a small potty, he laughs and sits on it then gets off he hasn’t done anything on it

i feel guilty like I’m failing him As he’s not potty trained yet and 3 months off being 2.5

is there any tips what can I do?? I don’t want to make him scared of the potty and force it

He's still very young. I wouldn't stress about it. Personally I'd wait until the weather is better so that you can be in the garden (if you have one) some of the day. And maybe look into different methods. There are a few ways to go about it. I did the oh crap method with my daughter which I found good. There is a potty training board on here where you might find other ideas/methods too.

He's very young! My DS wasn't ready until 3:5. We had several attempts over the year and it just wouldn't work at all. When he finally was ready, he did it immediately. There's plenty of time!

Namerchanger1 · 04/04/2024 20:21

We waited til ours was nearly 3, did it in the summer and it took him a weekend to get it

dont stress it. No point when he’s still so little

Hes so young! My earliest potty trainer was 2 yrs 9 months, she was just ready. The latest was 4 yrs 3 months, took him ages to be ready.

Read the oh shit potty training book (take some of it with a pinch of salt eg night time training and that it will be the end of the world if you already have potties in the house), waiting until the weather is better for potty training, make sure he can manage to pull his own trousers up and down, understands the words wet and dry and what it feels like to be wet when in the bath or water play.

Theduchy · 04/04/2024 20:23

2.5 is very young! I know 3 little ones about that age none of whom have even started trying potty training yet. My DD was 30 months.

InTheRainOnATrain · 04/04/2024 20:24

At some point you just have to go for it, no more nappies and commit. But he’s pretty bang on average age for it, not late. Next time you can clear a week in your diary, research some methods, pick one you think will work for him and go for it.

SubParbanMum · 04/04/2024 20:26

If I’d have waited for mine to show total signs of readiness I’d have been waiting an eternity. I trained both of mine at about 2.3/4 months and both were done confidently within a week.
follow the ‘oh crap’ method and take some time off (if you can) and dedicate time to cracking it.
you can’t really have nappies and a potty at the same time, that’s very confusing!
good luck, you’ll both be fine.

We were the first of my NCT group to potty train at 26mo. Everyone else had managed it by 37 mo. So I wouldn't worry too much.

My dc had nappy rash so we went nappy free for three days and I thought I might as well try the potty. DC didn't tell me they needed it. I either realised they did from their body language, or kept my eye on the clock (no wee for two hours =sit on the potty. I'd read to dc as they sat there to encourage them to sit there until they produced.

I didn't go out much for two days and I had one of those portable potties. Also some plastic sheeting for the carpet.

We had very few accidents. Worked well for us.

My boy is 3 next month and not yet potty trained, your boy is still young and there's plenty of time before you'd need to be concerned IMHO x

Jk987 · 04/04/2024 23:11

Don't worry about it! I waited until my child was over 3 before potty training and it's fine.

mrsfollowill · 04/04/2024 23:18

Mine was over 3- I think he was around 3 and 2 months and at nursery 2 days a week- I'd tried when he was 2 and 1/2 and it was a disaster. Nursery offered - they had a gang of 6 toddler boys and had them trained in a couple of days! I sent six changes of clothes with him and none needed - no accidents. It helped having the child sized loos and them all being rounded up together I think. I just carried it on the days he was home.

Tetchypants · 04/04/2024 23:23

If they don’t crack it it in a week, wait a month.

Nearly 2.5 yo not potty trained

is perfectly normal

SmallIslander · 04/04/2024 23:30

My son is similar. His sibling was potty trained by now. I'm going to wait until we have a couple of weeks of nice weather and let him run round the garden with nothing on the bottom half and use the oh crap method.

Same here. DC1 was potty trained pretty easily within a few days at 26 months. DC2 is 30 months and has been introduced to the potty for months but has never done a wee in it yet. Originally was planning to crack on with giving it a proper go this weekend but I'm now very unwell with pregnancy sickness so cannot. Will give it a go whenever I'm better but if previous pregnancies are anything to go by it may not be for another month or two unfortunately.

Caravaggiouch · 06/04/2024 18:09

27 months is only just over turning 2. You’re overthinking this, it’s not remotely “too late”.

PSEnny · 06/04/2024 18:10

I agree with others, he is too young. My DD was over 3 and it was a really quick process as she was ready. I would wait.

ontheflighttosingapore · 06/04/2024 18:14

He won't learn if you keep the nappy on though
