1st birthday ideas? Scuttlebug?

Hi all, my child’s first birthday is coming up and I’m wondering about getting him a scuttlebug? Realistically would it be suitable or is he too young? He’s cruising and can stand independently for up to a minute and walk a little with a push walker. But he isn’t properly walking yet.

I’ve seen some other cool presents like water/sand tables and activity tables etc but we live in a flat and don’t have lots of space. Scuttlebug seems good as its folds up compact. Just want to check it’s suitable though!

So far we/family are getting a personalised backpack for nursery and toy chest for his room. I was also thinking about a Montessori busy board but not sure if he is too young for it?

Yes to scuttlebug! But get the one that's XL and adjustable that's on Amazon as it grows with the child, the others they start using at about 18 months but can't really use beyond 2. My 4 YO has been using his for 3 years!

Ah great! Would he not be too small for the xl one? He isn’t the tallest kid!

We actually have two as the first one was so loved and my boys are 5, just turned 4 and 2. I would say at just turning 1 he will struggle but mostly because most children are only just taking their first steps at that point. I think at 18 months they'd be able to start using it. I looked at a video and my son, who is short for his age, looked happy using it and that was filmed just before his 2nd birthday. His feet are flat on the floor so I assume he probably just would have been more on tiptoes between 18 months and 2. I look at some of the tiny scuttlebugs which are the ones people usually buy and they are SO small that I don't think my current two-year-old would even fit on them anymore, so these ones just last for years.

And sorry just to clarify, it's adjustable, so the shortest setting isn't too big. There are three heights Smile

DD has just turned 1 and we were gifted one for her birthday, she's walking independently but at the moment she just likes to push it around the house she can't really get on or off herself yet. I don't think it will be long until she can ride it though

Thanks guys. Hmm I'm now torn between giving him one for christmas when he'll be 20 months and maybe get more use out of it, or giving it to him now and letting him experiment with it. I think I'm just struggling to work out what might be a good present for between 12 and 18 months!

What do people think about a pikler triangle climbing frame for this birthday? DH wants to get one as our kid is very actively crawling, pulling up on things etc. We could probably make space for it, but again, I'm just worried he's a bit too young for it?

Deff get a scuttlebug. DD1 got one for her first birthday, and still occasionally goes on it at 4.

DD2 is 10 months and already has fun with it, just spinning the wheels.

They don’t really ride them till 18months ish, but they also don’t know it’s their birthday so it doesn’t matter!

InTheRainOnATrain · 04/04/2024 09:48

Scuttlebug is a great idea! Busy boards were also popular at aged 1-2 so could go for that too. Pikler climbing frame in a flat would be a hard pass from me, I don’t want my home to look like a daycare. Also, maybe a controversial opinion but I also think they’re just a bit shit because the window where they’re old enough to climb them but not too old to find them boring is actually really small.

We did need want read wear.

For the want we got her a proper xylophone which she just bashed for 2y but now she is 3 she is being a bit more deliberate and in another year or so she might be able to do a simple song
I think the want was some new cloth nappy wraps as she was outgrowing her newborn ones.

She got a tricycle from one set of grandparents which is also still uses at 3.

Definitely look for presents they can grow into or with as on the day they will just be interested in the box!

I was going to suggest a Pikler triangle. Assuming he’d be supervised, I don’t think he’s too young. Or a baby slide could be good too.

I would recommend a wheely bug, especially if you have wooden floor. I got them for all of mines 1st birthdays and the oldest still rides around the house on theirs now (aged 5). https://www.wheelybug.com/

We got ours 2nd had from market place, best purchases!

Scuttlebug is good as others have said

ikea toy kitchen and outdoor playhouse are prob our biggest hits
it also give relatives stuff to buy (toy food and pans etc)

the climbing frames are FINE if you have tonnes of space - our friends who have them don’t get as much use out of them as they’d hoped.

at 2 years we got a micro scooter and we got a tricycle for Christmas at 19m our DD lovesss both of these

cookielove · 04/04/2024 10:08

My 3 year old still uses our scuttle bug, the adjustable one wasn't available when we purchased it but would definitely of got it if i had known.

I really wanted the triangle too but we didn't have the space or money. But i did find a foldable one and i was tempted!

pringles123 · 04/04/2024 10:17

thanks guys! Think we might go with the scuttlebug. I also like the idea of the megablocks table, but we would need to create space and I'm not sure if I would want it constantly out. The wheely bug looks so cute! But I think the compact nature of the scuttlebug might be more practical for us. We'll hopefully be moving to a house with more space and a garden in the next few months, so maybe we can be more adventurous then and consider a pikler triangle at that stage.

Are there any particular busy boards you would recommend for a 1 year old?

My grandaughter had hers before he could get her leg over it, hands on the seat she'd push it
Now 4, she still rides it and enjoys it
Still cn quite unfold it herself- perhaps a good thing!

idontlikealdi · 04/04/2024 13:58

We got DTs scuttlebugs for their first birthdays, they couldnt use them properly but they liked to climb on them. We kept them until they were around 3ish I think and they were used all the time. They switched to scooters after that.
