Year 4 Swimming lessons with school

DS1 starts the school swimming lessons on the 9th April, he's very excited...he'd love lessons on weekends but I can't afford it, as a compromise I said if he takes to it with the school lessons and really enjoys it I'll book him 'proper' ones for when they finish.

So, has anyones children been on these school swimming lessons? did they enjoy them? do they get a certificate or anything for completing them? anything I should watch out for?

Thanks

My 9yo started his lessons with school, last summer in yr 3. He loves it, they just been told restarting again when they go back after easter, really excited!! Hes not had any certificates yet. I would get sum goggles as my ds1 didnt like getting the water in his eyes. Apart from that, cant think of anything else.

School lessons often ban google, so don't go to the expense of getting them until you find out if goggles are allowed. My school aalso insist on tight fitting swimming trunks for boys, no baggy shorts,
The teachers who teach the school lessons at my dc's primary also teach my dc's at their saturday morning lessons.

My Dc's loved their school lesson, i think part of it is the excitement of going out of school. They did get certificates but not the ASA ones which is what I got when I learned to swim at school, but that is the option my dc's school has taken.

My dcs didn't enjoy school lessons that much, but I think it's entirely dependent on the teacher you get and how your child gets on with them. The same is true with non-school lessons. Very often the same teachers teach at both and there is little difference between the two.

I think most schools do them now, don't they? Its part of the curriculum that children should be able to swim a length by the end of year 6. Our primary school does lots of 'tests' which they get certificates for. IIRC, they are the local council certificates.

Rather than booking him onto a course, could you take him once or twice a month? Much cheaper and he'll be learning the same things in both school and club lessons, so seems a bit pointless imho.
