Breastfeeding is this “normal?”

I exclusively breastfed my older daughter for 18 months and she would feed and then come off when she was done, it was always after what I thought was a decent amount of time so to speak. Even night feeds although shorter she would just unlatch when she was done.
i now have a second baby and find in the day when she’s feeding she kind of comes off sometimes to look around, other times to touch my face, sometimes for no apparent reason and then comes back on but sometimes she doesn’t come back on. but it’s quite constant on and off so hard to tell when she’s done. Of course I understand I’m feeding on demand so I don’t expect her to feed for x amount of mins every feed but I do expect some continued feeding for a few minutes or so. At night sometimes when she’s feeding it’s the opposite she can stay latched for ages and I end up unlatching her. Is this common do some kids just not unlatch?
for reference she is almost 6 months.

In exactly the same boat as you. Breastfed DD for a year and she would stay latched on until done but currently feeding 4mo DS who is doing exactly what your youngest is doing and I never know when he's finished feeding or if he's had enough, it's a bit of a nightmare.

Yes that’s normal. Interested in other stuff and potentially comfort feeding. I’d just put the boob away when they come off and they will soon learn that they use it or lose it. Have you introduced any solids yet?

Yes very normal with my daughter

Sounds normal to me

Following as also my experience. DS1 fed until he was full. DS2 is 4 months and he seems to start and stop regularly. I then put it away thinking he’s done and 10 mins later he’s crying and I realise he’s hungry and he has a decent feed!

Hi all thank you for your response and reassurance!
do any of you also have the not unlatching at night/adleep? It’s not a huge issue as I unlatch her but I often wonder when enough is enough so to speak!

@Neodymium i haven’t started solids yet as her sitting is still not there, she turned 6 months today and we’ve been practicing sitting so hopefully in next week or 2!

Mine were the other way around. DC1 woukd latch on and off. Very difficult to know when they were done. Often had to take them off, do a nappy change and try again when they were very little.

DC2 came along and it was bam, 5 minutes and I'm done thanks. She even started doing breast compressions do she could feed faster at a few months old.

We have that too. He essentially falls asleep feeding, though I had that with my first as well. When it’s obvious he’s asleep, I take him off, but he carries on making the movement with his mouth for a few more seconds!

@ParsonsPont i do try that but then sometimes she flails about looking for it again so I think oh she’s still hungry. But it can be after a while and considering at this age they do become efficient at feeding I suspect she might be using me more as dummy!
my first also used to feed and fall asleep but then she would unlatch as she fell asleep so this I’m finding quite hard!

kids are so unique you think you know what you’re doing and then bam your second is completely different!
