DD waking up choking, due to go on school trip. Any advice?

DD15 has had that awful cough for about a month. It seems to be getting better but about two weeks ago she started waking up in the middle of the night completely unable to breath. Not just a bit congested but sounding as is her throat has closed up. After a bit of coughing she was fine and went back to sleep not always remembering it. We got antibiotics from the doctor 4 days ago but she still woke up choking last night. She has pillows under her mattress to try to prop herself up.

She’s supposed to go on a much anticipated school trip abroad in a few days. I’m contemplating trying to book a room in the same hotel as the school so she can sleep with me. Not sure the school would allow this.

Anyone have any experience of this happening? I’m slightly panicked it’s something worse than just the leftovers of a nasty cough.

As she is 15 she should be asked what she wants to do.

Does she want to go on the trip?
Does she want you to be in the same hotel? I know my daughters would have hated the thought of their mum being on a school trip with them.

@NotTooOldPaul she desperately wants to go but doesn’t want to scare her room mates waking them up choking. Also not sure she would be allowed to go if we warn the teachers this may happen.

I’m imagining some kind of scenario where I skulk ninja-like round the hotel and no pupils knows I’m there, and she just comes to sleep with me so I can deal with the choking. They would be out the hotel most of the day anyway.

She is taking anti biotic for an infection, she isn't well and shouldn't be going on a school overnight trip.

It could be reflux.
Try Gaviscon after meals and before bed, or if you have time, get some advice from GP re some Omeprazole.
Hope this works and she has a good time.

Not to worry you, but that's how I was diagnosed with asthma. It came on following a long chest infection.

I'd probably take her back to the Dr before the trip and explain she's still bad at night. It might be she needs to take something else.

What has she said about you staying at the hotel?

FishFingerseveryday · 25/03/2024 09:44

@heavensakes she would be happy for me to go unobtrusively if it means she can still go! Haven’t spoken to the school about it yet. We’re waiting to hear back from the doctor today, he was pretty unconcerned at the first appointment which I was surprised by. During the day she’s absolutely fine, but there’s presumably some residual phlegm. Apparently there’s something called post-nasal drip which my DH has Google-diagnosed her with.

Yes, it could be post nasal drip, it's commonly more manifested as cough, reflux, more as waking up choking-type of sensation, but is plausible.

It is treated with diligent use of a mild steroid nasal spray like Beconase ( which you can get otc, commonly used for Hay Fever). If its this, its important to take it properly, ie 2 sprays, ( DON'T sniff it too quickly or strongly as it'll just be delivered down the throat, avoiding the inflamed nasal mucosa which is where it is needed; it can also cause oral Thrush in the throat, which you don't want) twice daily.
It'll take a few days to work as it's a topical, not systemic treatment.

I started with this over Xmas, it's very scary. For me it is silent reflux (laryngopharyngeal reflux) - you need gaviscon advance after meals and before bed. Elevate bed (not with extra pillows as this squashes the stomach and makes the reflux worse) - books under legs near head end would work. And avoid onions, tomatoes, garlic, fruit other than bananas and melon, chocolate, mint...there are more, look up LPR diet or GERD diet.
